Piano

Location: Newark - Spread Eagle public house (ceased operation in 1968)

Further Comments: The family running this venue were awoken by the sound of the piano playing downstairs. Fearing an intruder, they investigated - opening the locked door to the room where the piano stood, the music suddenly ceased, and no one could be found. The building was also home to disembodied footsteps.

Hanged Man

Victorians

Further Comments: This building is said to be haunted by two elderly female ghosts dressed in blue Victorian dresses. Another Victorian girl, this time young and blonde, is also said to run down a corridor before vanishing. Finally, the ghost of an US pilot has been spotted walking around the grounds.

Large Dog

Location: Norton - Limetree Avenue

Further Comments: A driver and his passenger spotted a large black shaggy dog with red eyes standing in the road ahead of their car. They drove slowly past the creature, which was tall enough to look down at the occupants through the driver side window. The driver then gazed into his mirror to see the dog vanish.

Giant Spider

Location: Nottingham - Stonebridge Road, close to site of Wrights & Dobson factory (no longer standing)

Further Comments: A local librarian driving along Stonebridge Road at night caught sight of a giant spider. The creature was over sixty centimetres at the legs with a body the size of a dinner plate. The spider crawled across the road and disappeared into a disused factory, leaving the witness in shock.

Monk

Further Comments: The site is said to be haunted by a monk and a Cavalier, though it is unknown whether a particular event connects them. A few staff reported feeling something touch them late at night.

Journalist

Location: Nottingham - The Works Nightclub

Further Comments: The nightclub was built on the site from where the Nottingham Evening Post once operated. The club was said to contain a friendly but mischievous spirit. The case was investigated by East Midlands Ghost Investigation Group, who discovered the entity was a former journalist.

Clanks of the Carriage

Location: Nottingham - Thorneywood Station (no longer operational) and tunnel (now bricked up)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s, 1970s
Further Comments: Sounds of old steam engines, and the clanking of carriages were heard around this former station, even though the last train to pass through was in 1951. The tunnel was said to be haunted by the sounds of footsteps that crunched on the gravel, and some say that a ghostly train still travels through it.

Dark Man

Location: Nottingham - Sherwood Manor public house, Mansfield Road

Further Comments: Wearing a large floppy hat, this dark figure has been encountered in the cellar. He is blamed whenever items are moved around. It may be the same man who is seen in other parts of the building, wearing a top hat.

A ghost travels along disused rail tracks.

Man with Lamp

Location: Nottingham - Sherwood Rise Tunnel near former New Basford station (tunnel now bricked up)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1953
Further Comments: A phantom man swinging a lamp was seen emerging from the tunnel and walking a short distance along the track before vanishing. He was thought to be an engine driver killed during the 1890s.

Booted Figure

Location: Nottingham - Shop / private flat, Hounds Gate

Further Comments: Mr Gardner, living above a shop along the road, watched a uniformed figure wearing wellington boots enter a room before promptly vanishing. Disembodied footsteps also haunted the site, as did a voice that shouted 'halt!'.

Cellar Man

William Bendigo Thompson

Location: Nottingham - Small copse in Bestwood estate known as Bendigo's Ring

Further Comments: Verging on legend rather than haunting, it is said that Thompson would often be found drunk in this copse, and local children would taunt him. His phantom now returns to the area, ready to scare any children in petty revenge.

William Bendigo Thompson

Location: Nottingham - St Mary's Rest Garden, Bath Street

Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: The ghostly figure observed standing by the Bendigo Memorial Stone is thought to be the phantom of the man himself - William Bendigo Thompson was a bare knuckle boxer who died in 1880 after falling down a staircase at home. Thompson may also be the ghost that has been reported running around the area. The garden is also haunted by a woman's screams that can be heard at night.

The Black Lady

Location: Nottingham - St Matthew's Vicarage, Talbot Street

Date / Time: Between 1883-1907
Further Comments: Canon Thomas Boys Barraclough Ferris would hear footsteps and other strange sounds in his vicarage. Ferris would later encounter a ghostly figure wearing a grey gown, which (despite the colouring) would be identified as the Black Lady. Other members of the household would also spot the apparition, although the entity ceased to appear after Ferris moved on.

Lifted Candlestick

Location: Nottingham - St Peter's church, Radford

Date / Time: Late 1960s
Further Comments: Rev James Lemon claimed a heavy brass candlestick was lifted and dropped, landing around five feet (1.52 metres) from the table on which it had stood. A local paper reported other strange events had occurred at the church, including a vestry door opening unaided.

Young Girl

Further Comments: The churchyard is said to be haunted by a young girl and possibly the ghost of an unknown man. The man may also haunt the road - there are reports of both a young male ghost and the spirit of an older man who have been observed here.

Screaming Woman

Location: Nottingham - Stonebridge Road

Further Comments: Phantom sounds appear to be quite at home along Stonebridge Road - the sound of a factory siren is still heard, even though the building no longer stands, and a woman can be heard screaming in the early hours of the morning. A phantom man, however, has been seen in the area, though there is no description of what he looks like.

Wet Prints

Location: Nottingham - 1 Queens Street, British Transport Police Station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1977 and 2007
Further Comments: An officer who was working alone at night in 1977 heard a heavy door slam. Going to investigate, he found a set of wet footprints leading to the toilets, even though the weather was dry outside. Following the prints into the toilets, he found the room empty. Thirty years later, another officer spotted a man walk into the toilets - realising that he and his colleague should have been the only people on site, the officer investigated the room and found it empty.
