White Woman

Location: Rhyl - Start of the Dyserth Road bends
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The white figure of a lady was seen standing behind a wall, leaning over the top.

Afanc

Location: River Conwy - Llyn yr Afranc (aka Beaver Pool)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Afanc was a monster, thought to resemble a beaver, which attacked locals and dragged them to the bottom of the river. The beast was defeated after being tricked into sleeping by a fair maiden.

Human Sacrifice

Location: River Dee - Waters of the river
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Once a year
Further Comments: It is said that once a year the water monster hiding here demanded three human sacrifices to prevent it from terrorising the local neighbourhood.

Monkey

Location: Rossett - Former nursing home (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1986-1990
Further Comments: Many strange events were reported by a former worker here, including residents complaining that a small monkey had entered their rooms and that children were playing in the garden (staff could never find neither). The whiff of pipe tobacco would sometimes be detected and tapping on windows heard. At one point in the early 1980s a priest was contacted after a 'bad feeling' was reported after the conversion of an old room into a bedroom.

Old Jeffrey

Location: Rossett - Golden Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ploughman was tried and executed for murder; his body nailed to a wooden board which would later be used in the construction of this pub. His ghost reportedly prefers to frequent Room 2.

Jack Swan

Location: Rowen - Bwlch y Ddeufaen
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Swan was hanged for robbing and murdering Jesse Robert - Swan was caught after being discovered with Robert's watch. An old legend says Swan's ghost would be attracted to anyone passing by with a watch, so locals would remove their time pieces if travelling by.

Grey Lady

Location: Ruthin - Ruthin Castle (hotel)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Clear nights
Further Comments: This lady was married to a fifteenth century steward at the castle - she decapitated her husband when she discovered him with a younger woman. In turn, she was beheaded for the act of revenge, and now the spook makes fleeting appearances at the former fortress. A man in armour is also occasionally reported.

Old Man

Location: Ruthin - Three Pigeons Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When the inn was put up for sale in 2016, one of its USPs came in the form of two ghosts. One was said to be an old man who sat in an armchair, the other a teenager.

Crocodile

Location: St Asaph - Cefn Caves
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1870
Further Comments: Measuring around one hundred and forty centimetres in length, a crocodile was said to have been killed by a local man in this cave.

Keeper

Location: Talacre - Point of Ayr Lighthouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: An old fashioned lighthouse keeper was observed standing at the top of the lighthouse, even though the building was locked up. Others have also reported strange happenings at and around the site. In 2009, the owners of the lighthouse applied to erect a sculpture to honour the sightings.

John and Lucy

Location: Trefriw - Fairy Falls public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 2007
Further Comments: The landlord of this pub reported that two ghosts haunted the property, going by the names of John and Lucy.

Roman Soldiers

Location: Trelawnyd - Gop Carn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1938
Further Comments: Ghostly Roman troops have been reported patrolling the site. Some believe the hill is the final resting place of Boudicca, others say it is that of a Roman general.


The Devil making a deal.

Daffyd Ddu

Location: Tremeirchion - Churchyard Wall
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Former vicar and black magician, Daffyd made a pact with the Devil to take his soul 'whether buried in the churchyard or out'. Needless to say, the wizard cheated Old Nick by ensuring his body was buried under the boundary wall.

Reduction in Numbers

Location: Tremeirchion - Salusbury Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2010s
Further Comments: It was claimed that this pub once had seven ghosts, but an exorcism reduced the number to three.

Jane Jones

Location: Treuddyn Mold - Penyffordd Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1997 - 2010
Further Comments: This farmhouse was home to many strange phenomena, including a phantom named Jane Jones (whose gravestone was discovered under the lawn), a ghostly monk who looks 'real' until he vanishes, and poltergeist-like behaviour. After an Irish couple reported seen visions of the Virgin Mary in the field, the location also became a mini pilgrimage site. It is important to note that the current (as of 2024) owner has not experienced anything out of the ordinary since moving in, and believes no evidence supports the paranormal claims.

Drowned Schoolboy

Location: Wrexham - Erddig Estate, the '46 steps'
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A local legend from this area relates to the untimely death of a young lad who drowned nearby. He has appeared several times over the years, dressed in his old school uniform.

Distorted Mist

Location: Wrexham - Kings Mills, 'Biniki' tourist spot, Hang Man's Tree
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The strange mist seen moving slowly around the tree base may be connected to the previous usage of the thick branches.

Smashed Windows

Location: Wrexham - Nelson's Arms public house
Type: Other
Date / Time: July 1873
Further Comments: While investigating a disturbance, the landlady ran into two servants who claimed they had encountered two strange men downstairs. Police were summoned by could find no-one. After several more days of strange sightings, smashed windows and stones being thrown by an 'unseen agency', the servants were arrested and confessed they performed the actions as a joke.

Tall Figure

Location: Wrexham - Oak Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999, early evening
Further Comments: A driver and passenger driving along this road watched a tall dark figure cross the road ahead of them. The figure appeared to be hovering.

One Eyed Cleaner

Location: Wrexham - Stiwt Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: June 2009
Further Comments: Paranormal team Soulsearchers Northwest UK investigated this building and claimed to contact several spirits, including a cleaner with one eye, a young child who fell from a balcony, and a former manager.

Shattering Glasses

Location: Wrexham - Thirsty Scholar public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: A vicar was summoned to bless the pub after staff reported glasses shattering in their hands and items being thrown around the building. Some say the public house was once used as a mortuary.

Tall Officer

Location: Wrexham - Wrexham police station
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Summer 2003
Further Comments: While refuelling a van in the yard, Special Constable Mark Davies spotted the reflection of a tall policeman standing behind him in one of the windows. Davies turned to speak to the officer, but there was no one there. It was speculated that the ghostly figure was a motorcyclist who had died a few months earlier.
