Clwyd Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Swift Dancers

Location: Denbigh - Field by Lanelwyd House (likely to be no longer standing)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Summer, 1757
Further Comments: Four witnesses came across a group of fifteen or sixteen strange dancers in this field. Dressed in red, the dancers waved red handkerchiefs.

Skeleton

Location: Denbigh Moors - Plas Pren, ruins opposite the Sportsman's Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Bones glowing brightly in the dark, this bony figure walks around the area of a ruined hunting lodge.

Ring Seeker

Location: Flint - Cornist Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The park is reportedly haunted by the tragic wraith of a woman searching for her lost engagement ring. Her father disapproved of her suitor and threw the ring into the park. The lady died before it was found and continues the search to this day.

Old Man with Stick

Location: Greenfield - Road connecting Meliden and Greenfield, just into Greenfield
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1961
Further Comments: A male driver reported while returning from dropping his girlfriend home, he glanced at the passenger seat of his car and found an old man sitting in the seat, wearing a cap and holding a walking cane. The witness braked sharply, jumped out of the car, and ran partly down the road. Once he recovered from the shock a few minutes later, he returned to the car and found the old man had gone.

Victorian Woman

Location: Greenfield - Sun Dawn Interiors, Coast Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: A picture taken just after Dawn Thompson took the building lease is said to contain the image of a woman in Victorian attire. The shop is also reported to be haunted by a young child who died on the site. Both entities are reported to be friendly.

Dead Woman in Night Gown

Location: Gresford - Little Acton Hill (now Bluebell Lane), between Gresford and Wrexham
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Two men walking along this dark road at night were scared by an approaching figure dressed in white. As it came ever closer, the men were relieved to recognise it as the wife of one of the men. However, the figure suddenly vanished - the two Welshmen rushed back to the house of the woman, only to find her dead.

Darting Phantom

Location: Gresford - Pant-yr-Ochain Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ghostly figure is reported to have been observed darting up the staircase. Voices have also been heard in empty parts of the inn.

Vanishing Dog

Location: Gwaenysgor - Farm in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1887
Further Comments: A ghostly dog took up residence in this farm, lying quietly until touched, when the creature would vanish and mysterious bells heard to ring.

CE III

Location: Halkyn Mountain - Exact location not known
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 1982
Further Comments: An alien contactee claimed to have witnessed a ufo landing on the mountain, where the craft left imprints. The witness was later contacted by a strange being with short curly hair who wore a blue jumpsuit.

Dafydd

Location: Halkyn Mountain - Ffagnallt Hall Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The skull of Dafydd, a Welsh Prince, can be found here. The last time it was removed from the building, the person responsible was plagued by shadowy figures and screams - these stopped once the skull was returned.

Murdered Man

Location: Halkyn Mountain - Off the A55 road, heading towards Halkyn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghostly figure that sometimes makes his presence known is thought to have been murdered while delivering wages to the silver miners who worked here.

Soft Footsteps

Location: Hawarden - Glynne Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A woman is reported to haunt the site, though she is smelt and heard but never seen. Perfume has been detected though the source remained elusive, and footfalls barely heard also went untraced.

Sylvia

Location: Henllan - Llindir Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Legend has it that Sylvia would sleep around behind her husband's back when he was away at sea. One night he returned early, found his wife and another man in a compromising position, and murdered them both. Sylvia's ghost is now said to lurk around the inn.

Ringing Road

Location: Henllan - Road close to Caerau
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Early eighteenth century
Further Comments: A dip in the road would ring whenever a cart moved across it. Two men excavated the spot and discovered a secret doorway. They decided to stop for dinner, but as they left the spot, a storm blew up and filled the hole.

Screams of the Drowning

Location: Holt - Bridge over the Dee
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Two young lads were thrown into the icy water beneath the bridge by their trustees, to prevent the children from inheriting a large amount of money and land. Their pitiful yelps can be heard coming from the river at night.

Shadows

Location: Holt - Holt Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Shadowy figures are said to walk the grounds of the castle, though the myth appears to be recent and witnesses are not forthcoming.

Witch

Location: Holywell - Basingwerk Abbey, and forests of Longdendale
Type: Werewolf
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A witch who could change into a wolf was unable to return to human form after the Abbot of Basingwerk asked heaven to stop the witch from killing innocents. The witch/wolf ran into King Henry II's hunting party and after a vicious fight, the party slayed the creature.

Vanishing Monk

Location: Holywell - Basingwerk Abbey, Greenfield
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A monk, held in a trance for several hundred years, was released and appeared back at the ruined abbey. He was confused and asked the people there where his friends had gone to. Feeling sorrow for the monk, one person offered him a meal - as soon as the monk's fingers touched the food, the monk turned to dust.

Dafydd

Location: Holywell - Flacgnallt Hall
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: The skull of Dafydd Prince of Wales is housed in a box at the hall. A curse is said to befall the owners of the building if it is ever removed from the property.

Healing Waters

Location: Holywell - St Winefride's Well (aka well of St Winifred)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This well sprung up where St Winefride's severed head hit the ground after she was decapitated by an angry local. Luckily, St Beuno was passing by; he picked the head up off the ground and stuck it back on Winefride's shoulders. She soon recovered.

Self-Powering Light Bulbs

Location: Holywell - Talaacre Arms public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Beer glasses have been known to fill themselves, and a mischievous spirit appears to be able to illuminate lamps and light bulbs when not plugged in to the mains. It is unclear whether the pub saves on electricity bills.

Locked Room

Location: Llanddoged - Maenan Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but circa nineteenth century
Further Comments: This hall was once said to have a haunted room to which the door was kept permanently locked. The haunting started after Sir Thomas Kyffin struck a boy who died of the injury - the boy's body was hidden down a well.

Wicked Ghost

Location: Llandegla - River Alyn and rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century (or prior to)
Further Comments: Not much is known about this entity which was banished from the rectory by a man named Griffiths and buried in a box under a rock by the river.

Epilepsy Cure

Location: Llandegla - St Tecla's Well
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Well still present
Further Comments: This well was said to cure epilepsy by washing in its waters after sunset, making an offering of fourpence, walking around the well while reciting the Lord's Prayer, and then sleeping under the alter using a bible for a pillow (all while holding a cockerel if a man, or a hen if a woman).

Downed Craft

Location: Llandrillo - Berwyn Mountains
Type: UFO
Date / Time: January 1974
Further Comments: Some researchers believe that a UFO crashed on the mountain, the event covered up by the UK Government.
