Further Comments: Wearing either Victorian or Edwardian clothing, this phantom woman was spotted in an office. She vanished around a corner which led to a locked door.

Smoker

Further Comments: A phantom old man walks the upper parts of the building while smoking a pipe. It is more likely that the smell of smoke will be perceived than the apparition.

Headless Monk

Location: Shepperton - General area

Further Comments: In life, this monk eloped to the village and began living with a local lass. His brothers were less than happy with the breaking of vows, so tracked him down and decapitated him. The headless ghost is said to run through the village, trying to escape ecclesiastic law.

Downed Vickers

Location: Shepperton on Thames - Field near Ferry Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: In 1929 an old Vickers aircraft crashed in this field, killing its two crew members. The crash was heard several times over the next few years by locals and was even reportedly seen, glowing blue in the pale moonlight.

Christine

Further Comments: Christine, an anchorite at the church, tried to escape with a stranger she had fallen in love with. The villagers had other plans and captured Christine, forcing her to stay. Her ghost supposedly remained on the site.

Further Comments: Bathing naked at the pool, Emma swam further out when she saw that Prince (or King) John was approaching. Alas, she could not tread water and drowned. She sometimes returns to the area.

Jack?

Further Comments: A taxi driver and his three passengers watched a dark figure with no features dart across the road in front of them before leaping four and a half metres into the air to clear an embankment. The passengers compared the entity to Spring Heeled Jack.

Further Comments: Home to Sherard Osborn Cowper-Coles, electrometallurgist and inventor, Rossall House was said to be haunted by a ghost that was seen by Sherard's wife. The scientist once took a photograph of a chair that revealed a ghostly looking man sitting upon it, covered in a blanket and wearing a wig.

Scratching Post

Location: Wallis Wood - Footpath at edge of wood near Oakfields estate

Date / Time: Late 1980s or early 1990s
Further Comments: A mother and her two children returning from a visit to the mobile library spotted a 1.5 metre long black cat sitting on the path ahead of them. After watching the creature for a minute or two and realising that the cat was not going to move, the family went back the way they came. A year later when in the area, the family found the base of a tree was covered in scratches, as if the large cat had used it as a scratching post.

Big cat from a medieval bestiary.

Cardinal

Further Comments: Appearing in the dining hall, this former Cardinal was reportedly seen many times drifting around. It is believed that he could stand guard over a hoard of hidden treasure. The writer William Cobbett reported seeing a large grey cat while visiting the abbey, possibly an early Alien Big Cat encounter.

A ghost walking through a wall.

Woman Dressed in Satin

Location: West Clandon - Clandon House, Clandon Park

Date / Time: Last seen 1896?
Further Comments: This ghostly lady, named by one source as Elizabeth Knight, wears a cream coloured satin dress and carries a knife while walking the land surrounding the building. She is said to have once walked through the front wall of the house, appearing in every room before materialising through the back wall. A male ghost also haunts the area, recognised by his overgrown facial hair, as does another female spirit, this time dressed in black.

Dragon Slayer

Further Comments: A dragon which gave the locals a hard time was killed by an ex-soldier and his dog - the dog leapt onto the creature's face, while the man decapitated the wyrm.

Headless Horseman

Further Comments: A headless horseman is reported to haunt Westcott. In 2007, one man walking between Westcott and Dorking was followed by something unseen which pushed its way through thick bushes and made a trotting sound.

Further Comments: The plane was blown out of the sky during a storm in the mid-1930s; when the weather conditions are bad, the aircraft can be heard struggling in the wind.
