White Lady

Further Comments: This female form causes trouble on the roads as she drifts out in front of oncoming traffic. Some witnesses say the entity is more like a monk than a woman and a cyclist who spotted the figure in the road in 1960 said the phantom figure was twice the height of a normal person.

Further Comments: This phantom woman in a white dress is thought to have once haunted Hall Place before it burnt down - her ghost has now migrated to the nearby road.

White Woman

Location: Mansfield Woodhouse (Nottinghamshire) - The Vale woodland and surrounding area

Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The woodland is said to be haunted by a white female form. She is thought to be connected to the ruins of a house on the outskirts of the woodland.

White Rider

Location: Marazion (Cornwall) - Area once known as Marazion Green
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1840
Further Comments: In the days when horses were the main form of transport, this white woman would leap onto the back of a passing rider and refuse to leave until taken to the Red River, where she would vanish. The last witness, Buck Billy, died in 1840.

Further Comments: The building was haunted by a white female spectre murdered in the property.

White Woman

Location: Maryport (Cumbria) - Netherhall Mansion (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1973
Further Comments: Before the mansion burnt down, it stood empty for twenty years. The caretaker reported seeing a phantom grey lady within the building, and even though the mansion was boarded up, furnishings and fittings would be found thrown around within. Some believe the grey lady started the fire which finally reduced the mansion to a shell which was demolished.

White Lady Riding

Location: Melbury Osmund (Dorset) - Unidentified Barn

Date / Time: Unknown, likely nineteenth century
Further Comments: A drunk man fell asleep in the barn, waking at midnight to see a woman in white riding around on a buck. She moved so fast that the wind whipped up dust, causing the man to sneeze - the sound causing the lady to vanish.

Further Comments: Two members of staff, on different occasions, witnessed a woman in a long flowing dress pass through a room in this building. There have also been reports of poltergeist activity, which included a large table being overturned.

Further Comments: Sightings of this phantom white lady are said not to be uncommon, though any real details are fleeting.

Mary Way

Location: Much Wenlock (Shropshire) - Crossroads two miles southeast of town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century
Further Comments: This crossroads was said to be haunted by the ghost of Mary Way, murdered on the site. The phantom is reputedly headless and wears a shimmering white dress. A murderer was also said to be buried at the crossroads, although it is not clear whether it was Mary's killer.

Monks Cooking

Location: Musselburgh (Lothian) - Old Craighall

Further Comments: Several shades of religious people have been seen here, including monks, a bishop and a woman in white. The smell of fresh meat being cooked sometimes wafts through the house, even when no one is cooking.

Further Comments: This ghost, dressed in white, was seen emerging from a wardrobe by several members of the family. The family finally left the building after a mysterious fire broke out.

Further Comments: The pallid ghost of a lady was reported here.

Further Comments: One police officer is said to have lost his mind after seeing this phantom woman and became obsessed with reading everything he could about local ghost stories.

Man with Hound

Location: Navan (County Meath) - Skyrne Castle, Hill of Tara

Further Comments: A phantom man, tall and covered by a cloak, once haunted this area, accompanied by his hunting hound. The area is also home to a shadowy nun and a woman in white who screams as she is chased by an unidentified shadow.

Further Comments: Falling in love and becoming pregnant by the lord of the castle, a local girl committed suicide after being shunned by him after their love affair. Though her mother then cursed the evil lord (resulting in his death, and that of the estate's future heir), the young lass still returns to the site.

Further Comments: Several motorists are said to have encountered the phantom woman dressed in white that haunts this road, reporting their sightings to the police after driving through her.

Bride

Location: Newton le Willows (Merseyside) - Willow Park (and other meres and woods in the area)

Date / Time: 1947, and September 1949
Further Comments: This woman in white is said to be a bride murdered by her husband on their wedding night hundreds of years ago. She may have last been seen by a married couple who spotted a figure with folded arms standing amongst trees. Two years prior to this sighting, two women passing Castle Hill observed the phantom woman in white.

Further Comments: The woodland takes its name from a disused slaughterhouse. The white female form seen drifting in the area is thought to be the ghost of a woman involved in a car accident nearby.

Further Comments: The staircase of this property is reputedly haunted by a benign white feminine spirit. The house may have been built over the graveyard of a nunnery.

Further Comments: Killed by soldiers when she was discovered in a chapel, the shade of this white lady has been reported many times since.

Further Comments: Seen wandering around the gate of the church, this woman in white is thought to be looking for an unknown item. The ruined church itself is home to a tall man who has been seen standing at the location the altar once stood.

Further Comments: The ghosts of a white woman and of two children have been reported in this wooded area. While the woman in white has been named as Mary Chaworth Musters, the children are thought to have been murdered by their father William Saville, hanged for the crime in 1844. The sound of horses has also been reported.
