Ghostly Women in White and White Women

Governess

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Mosborough Hall

Further Comments: Now returning to the hall in the form of a white lady, the governess had her throat slit by the hall's Squire after she threatened to tell his wife of their affair. The sounds of their final argument can also be heard drifting around the hall at night. A man staying here also reported a phantom hound which awoke him at night.

White Lady

Location: Shepton Mallet (Somerset) - HMP Shepton Mallet (former prison)

Date / Time: Mid twentieth century (White Lady), Circa 2008 (American Serviceman)
Further Comments: Believed by staff at the prison to be the ghost of a woman executed there during the seventeenth century, this female presence was blamed for every cold spot and freak gust of wind within the building. More recently, staff have reported the ghost of an American serviceman, thought to be related to the period when the site was used by the US military.

Nun

Location: Skryne (County Meath) - Skryne Castle

Further Comments: This ghostly nun was once watched as she slowly dissolved into nothingness. She has also been heard walking in empty parts of the building, though the footsteps could belong to a white woman (thought to be a murdered maid) who also haunts the castle.

Slim Woman

Further Comments: This phantom woman in white died of the traditional broken heart after her father drove away her one true love. The entity has been reported exorcised. Another story attached to the site says that the Devil arrived one night to join a game of cards. Old Nick fled after one gambler spotted a cloven foot under the table.

Further Comments: After a long period of absence, this phantom woman was spotted by a member of the public in 2006. Staff who work at the building report feeling a strange presence in some of the rooms in this hall.

White Woman

Further Comments: This pale, lost shade could belong to one of the mummified bodies that were removed from a nearby tower in the mid-nineteenth century. A monk has been seen on the staircase, offering to help anyone struggling to ascend the tower.

Sarah Harrington

Location: Staveley (Derbyshire) - The Hagge (aka Hagg) (former mansion, now a farmhouse)

Further Comments: Harrington was a former Maid of Honor to Queen Henrietta and is thought to be the phantom woman in white who haunts this building. A mighty oak which stood in the garden was thought to scream and bled when cut; unfortunately, the tree blew down during a gale in 1883.

Location: Stirling (Stirling) - Rownam Avenue, and area of former manor house

Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: The wife of a former owner of the local manor house, this white woman drifted down the road after dusk for many years after her death. Sometimes the stories colour her green, like so many other ghostly women in this part of the world.

Steam Engine

Location: Stroud (Gloucestershire) - Woodchester Mansion, near the town

Date / Time: 2001, and 14 December 2019
Further Comments: A film crew spending a night in the building in 2001 reported loud disembodied banging that climaxed as if the sounds of a stream train charged through the house. The house is also reported to be haunted by a white lady, and the park surrounding the building is home to a Roman soldier, a figure resembling a monk, two American servicemen in Second World War uniforms, a headless horse and a dwarf which somersaults along the driveway. In 2019, a witness watched a horse and carriage driven by a man wearing a tall Victorian hat pass through a locked gate.

Location: Studland (Dorset) - Pathway from Studland beach to road near The Banks Arms pub

Further Comments: A woman wearing a white coat and white trousers, with hair down to her shoulders, walked past a group of four friends, telling them, 'I have just been for a swim' before disappearing from view. Four years later, one of the group spoke to a couple who had experienced the exact same encounter in the same area.

Further Comments: A woman who was betrayed by her lover drowned herself in a nearby pond (that no longer exists). Her ghost, dressed in white, wrings her hands as it drifts through the trees.

Further Comments: A man driving a horse and cart through the woods was startled by the appearance of a white lady on the seat next to him - she vanished as he drove past the last tree of the forest. This story could be an early version of the phantom hitchhiker tales.

Hitchhiker

Location: Taunton (Somerset) - A38 road near the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970, 2016
Further Comments: This man dressed in a long grey coat stands by the roadside, and if an oncoming car does not stop to offer him a ride, he throws himself in front of the vehicle. Either way, he vanishes without trace, normally leaving the witness scared and confused. A white female version of the man has also been reported in the same area.
