Rugby Ball

Further Comments: A zigzagging rugby ball shaped object, larger than an aircraft, was reported by a witness. The ufo was surrounded by red and orange lights.

Red Ball

Location: Reading (Berkshire) - Skies above Basingstoke Road, Whitley
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 14 April 2006
Further Comments: Three teenagers spotted a strange red glowing orb flying overhead as they were out walking.

Spinning Saucer

Location: Redruth (Cornwall) - Sky over town

Date / Time: 09 July 1976
Further Comments: A schoolteacher and several pupils watched a white spinning disc with pulsating lights pass overhead.

Radar/Visual Sighting

Location: Rendlesham (Suffolk) - Bentwaters USAF
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 13 August 1956
Further Comments: Several UFOs were detected by the base's radar, crossing the North Sea at speeds unmatched by any contemporary aircraft. One UFO was intercepted by a US fighter, but was soon lost.

Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk.

Date / Time: December 1981 (UFO), circa 1995 (big cats)
Further Comments: Once only famous in ufological circles, the story of the landing of an unknown craft at Rendlesham during the early 1980s still causes controversy today. Unrelated to the UFO sighting, the Big Cats of Suffolk website reported there had been a string of big cat sightings in the forest prior to 1995, with occasional sightings still reported.

Silver Discs

Location: Rhayader (Powys) - Skies over area

Further Comments: A fourteen-year-old boy watched two silver discs flying at height and in a southerly direction. The craft did not resemble any aeroplanes that he had seen.

Green Light

Location: Rickmansworth (Hertfordshire) - Skies over the town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: February 2010
Further Comments: Two police officers watched a bright green light quickly pass over the town and disappear over the horizon.

Diamond Formation

Location: Ring's End (Cambridgeshire) - Skies above March Road
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 10 April 2008, 23:00h
Further Comments: Andrew Warren and his son watched a diamond formation of lights as they passed overhead. Though the source of the lights appeared close, there was no sound, and the pattern appeared to hover before moving away. They also saw two other patterns of light, one of which was a 'V' shape.

Flying Fish

Location: Ringmer (Sussex) - Sky above area

Further Comments: A witness watched a fish-shaped orange glow with a black line where the mouth would be. A white dome could be seen on the top, and a fin at the back. The fast object moved westwards and was more than half a mile above ground level.

Black Oval

Location: Rochester (Kent) - Sky above Carnation Road
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Mid 1990s
Further Comments: One witness watched as a black oval shape unnervingly blocked out the night sky as it passed by.

Orange Jellyfish

Location: Romford (Essex) - Area over Acacia Avenue
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 30 August 2005
Further Comments: A family of four observed a set of three orange lights, 'undulating like a jellyfish', drifting over the town and heading upwards before they disappeared amongst the stars. The UFOs were also witnessed by two people on the outskirts of Romford.

Spaceship Alley

Location: Rossendale Valley (Lancashire) - General area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This part of the county has so many reports of strange nocturnal lights that it justifies the dramatic nickname. However, cynics name British Aerospace as a possible source for the displays.

Alien Fairy

Location: Rowley Regis (West Midlands) - Bluestone Walk
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 4 January 1979
Further Comments: Three figures, all less than four-foot tall with tissue paper wings, drifted into a house in the town and interrogated a housewife for an hour. She said they looked like fairies, though they had laser beams on top of their heads and left via an eight foot long UFO.

Circular Object

Location: Saxlingham (Norfolk) - Holt Road heading towards B1156
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 2010
Further Comments: A witness pulled their car over to have a better look at a circular object hovering about twenty metres above the road, as did another car behind them. The object did not make a sound and the witness estimated it was around five metres in diameter. The witness then lost their nerve and drove off, as did the occupant in the other car.

Glowing Light

Location: Scarborough (North Yorkshire) - Reasty Hill, Silpho Moor

Date / Time: 21 November 1957
Further Comments: A forty-six centimetre disc covered with strange hieroglyphics was found by three men who were investigating the sighting of a UFO which glowed eerily in the night sky.

Torpedo Shape

Location: SE10 (Greater London) - Greenwich Observatory
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 17 November 1882
Further Comments: Walter Maunder, the Royal Astronomer, observed an 'auroral beam' moving rapidly across the sky, which he also described as cigar-shaped and like a torpedo.

Spherical Object

Location: Sea between Isle of Man and Belfast (Isle of Man) - Sky
Type: UFO
Date / Time: February 1985
Further Comments: A captain, first officer and flight engineer of an aircraft flying from Belfast to the Isle of Man reported a bright white spherical object that became an orange beam.

Black Object

Location: Sheerness (Kent) - Skies over town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 12 October 1912
Further Comments: A large dark object was seen passing over the town, buzzing loudly.

Red Cloud

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Skies about Woodthorpe area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Circa February 2017
Further Comments: A red cloud which covered the roof of a house was seen by three people. Different coloured beams of light, mainly green, pink and blue, emerged from the cloud for around fifteen minutes before vanishing.

Dark Red Cloud

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Skies over town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 9 December 1731, 17.00h
Further Comments: This 'cloud' which shot beams of light, heating up the cold winter night, hovered over the town before heading off towards Ireland.

Hotspot

Location: Skipton (North Yorkshire) - Skies over area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This area was claimed to be a UFO hotspot by enthusiasts.

Exploding Blobs

Location: Slough (Berkshire) - Skies over the town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Mid-May 1973
Further Comments: Witnesses observed a black, pear-shaped balloon-like blob in the sky before it exploded into smoke and flame, falling to the ground (although no wreckage was reported). Another object was reported a few days later. Local research stations and their use of balloons were blamed for the UFO, although all the organisations denied knowledge.

Stretched Plectrum

Location: Snettisham (Norfolk) - Skies over the Wash

Date / Time: 22 August 2016
Further Comments: While watching some F15s over the Wash, a witness spotted a dark grey craft, the shape of a stretched plectrum, emerging from a cloud behind them. The ufo shimmered before entering a small cloud from which it did not reappear.

Low Flying Egg

Location: Sopley (Hampshire) - A338 between Avon and Sopley, near bridge over the river Avon
Type: UFO
Date / Time: November 1967
Further Comments: Two separate groups of witnesses watched as this craft, around 25 meters long, passed low over the road, melting the tarmac surface. Vehicles and lights nearby were disrupted.

Flying Disc

Location: Southend-on-Sea (Essex) - Skies over the town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 14 October 1954
Further Comments: A fighter pilot, while out on routine patrol, reported a near miss with a silver domed disc - the UFO travelled towards him at fantastic speed, veering off at the last possible second.
