Cure for Whooping Cough

Further Comments: Any child taken into the caves at low tide would be cured by the little people (or little person, depending on the legend) who lived within.

Goblin Home

Location: Ryme Intrinseca (Dorset) - Buckbarrow (current name of location unknown)

Date / Time: Seventeenth century?
Further Comments: Though no trace of the structure now remains, a barrow in this neighbourhood was once the home of goblins (or a close fairy family member).

Healing Waters

Location: Sabden (Lancashire) - Fairy Well
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: The one time rendezvous point of the little folk, their magical powers ensured the water of the well cured the sick.

Many Fairy

Location: Saddleworth (Greater London) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown, poem written circa 1824
Further Comments: A nineteenth century poem declared the area home to several fairy related entities, including Old Moss (the fairy queen), Old Pack and Matty Kew (who lived together), Old Hob, Old Baker, Blater of Old Tanme, Thrasher of Slack Cote, New Tame Fiend, Young Grange Bump (and possibly their parent, Bump), Old Delph Will, and Griffon Factory Marr.

Blessing

Location: Santon (Isle of Man) - Fairy Bridge
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: It is considered unlucky not to say 'good day' to the fairies as you cross the bridge. In recent years, people have begun to leave gifts and notes on a nearby tree for the fairies.

Several Dancers in White Muslin

Location: Saxmundham (Suffolk) - Harpers Lane
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: Observed by a couple of young children, the dancers only remained visible for a few seconds before disappearing.

Dancers

Location: Scalby (North Yorkshire) - Moors in the area, heading north
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A young man heading towards Whitby spotted a group of fairies dancing in a circle. The man joined them. At one point during the dance the fairies called out 'whip, whip!', and they pulled out and cracked small hunting whips. The man then called out the same words, which resulted in the fairies whipping him and giving chase as he fled towards Whitby.

Gruagach Attack

Location: Scorrybreac (aka Scorrybrec), Isle of Skye (Highland) - Cowshed in the area (likely no longer standing)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century
Further Comments: A long haired, fairy-like creature, the Gruagach in this area entertained itself by releasing cattle at night and could be heard laughing as farmers awoke to sort out the mess. The Gruagach killed one woman after she cursed its antics.

Cro Sith

Location: Scorrybreac (aka Scorrybrec), Isle of Skye (Highland) - Shores

Further Comments: The area where Clan Nicolson made their home was also the location of fairy cattle. The creatures were trapped and caught on the island after earth from a graveyard was scattered on the shore. Following the cattle's capture, a voice from the sea could be heard calling their names.

Jinny On Boggard

Location: Scunthorpe (Lincolnshire) - River Trent on Humberside/Lincolnshire border, area known as Jenny Hurn bend
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This little creature was like a small man or woman, though it had the face of a seal with long hair. It travelled on the water in a large pie dish. Another creature here, or possibly another form of the same one, had large tusks and swam in the water; it would only leave to feed. Finally, one piece of folklore has a supernatural steed that walks around on the surface of the water here.

Fairy Fort

Location: Shannon (County Clare) - Airport
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: While constructing a new runway during the 1950s, the chief engineer was warned that the work would result in the destruction of a fairy fort - the location of the runway was changed, leaving the fort undisturbed.

Rings

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Dead Man's Lane (aka Dead Lane), Ecclesall (lane may have been renamed, but in Greystones area)

Further Comments: An overgrown lane in the village (now a Sheffield suburb) was said to be home to fairies, with distinct fairy circles spotted in the grass. A headless woman also haunted the lane.

Further Comments: The island is renowned for its mischievous fairies, who take objects or mysteriously place other objects in strange places.

Pixies

Location: Shurton (Somerset) - Wick Barrow, aka Pixies Mound (on the site of Hinkley Point power station, private property)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: This barrow was the home to pixies, who were said to have caused several accidents during the construction of the power station.

Farm Hand

Location: Skipton (North Yorkshire) - Close House
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Being a dab hand with corn thrashing, this fairy fellow was most welcome at the house, but left when accidentally insulted by the owner.

Fairy Flag

Location: Sligachan, Isle of Skye (Highland) - Dunvegan Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Flag story unknown, cats seen circa 2002
Further Comments: The Flag of the MacLeod's was given to them by a fairy that changed herself into a mortal and married into the family - it can only be used three times, but each time it is waved, it grants the MacLeods victory over a foe. Used twice before (1490 & 1580), the flag remained true to the fairy's words. The Fairy Bridge near the castle is considered inherently evil, upsets animals, and is reputedly haunted by a clowder of cats once owned by a witch.

Phynnodderee

Location: Snaefell (Isle of Man) - Tholt-e-Will (aka Tholt-y-Will), Snafield mountain

Further Comments: The phynnodderee, also known as a fenodyree, started to help someone build their home but fled the area after a gift left for the fairy unbound it from the site.

Leaving Fairies

Location: Snizort, Isle of Skye (Highland) - Dun Borve

Further Comments: The locals once played a trick on the fairies here - they promptly moved away in protest.

Dancing Fairies

Location: Snowdon (Gwynedd) - Llyn Du'r Arddu

Further Comments: This small lake on the north side of Snowdon is home to fairies and goblins who dance around the shoreline.

Black Orb

Location: Soham (Cambridgeshire) - Private residence

Date / Time: 2017, summer
Further Comments: On a warm summer's evening, a witness heard flapping in their ears, like the sound of dragonfly wings. Turning their head, the witness spotted a black orb hovering in the room. As they approached, the orb darted into the garden through an open door.

Little People

Location: South Barrule (Isle of Man) - South Barrule hill

Further Comments: The south facing side of the hill is said to be where the vast majority of the island's fairies and pixies live. It is also said that a giant is asleep under the hill, having been cursed by Merlin.

Fairy Fort

Further Comments: This old hill fort once belonged to the fairies, although by stabbing the hill with a knife, one can hear the little people speak.

Gnomes

Location: Southend-on-Sea (Essex) - The Shrubbery

Further Comments: Mrs Rose told Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that she frequently spotted fairies and gnomes in the shrubbery. The gnomes would take the form of little old men who wore green and assumed the role of guardians to the fairies.

Nanny Diamonds

Location: Southwell, Portland (Dorset) - Road between Southwell and Cheyne

Further Comments: Little folk are still reputed to dance and cause mischief along this piece of road.

Speech

Further Comments: Fairies can be heard talking within the hill if the listener either runs around the hill nine times anticlockwise while the moon is waxing, or they stick a knife into the centre of the mound, or both.
