Grindylow

Further Comments: Likely a different name for the entity known as Jenny Greenteeth, this fairy-like creature would wait for passing children before dragging them into the water to drown.

Mummy

Location: Droylsden - Private residence along Chestnut Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2009
Further Comments: The occupants of this property would hear noises and voices at night, including the word 'mummy' and growling. An entity was also seen hovering over a bed.

Shadows and Coughing

Location: Eccles - Duke of York public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: Reported in 2008, shadows were said to pass people who are in the cellar, while coughing was also sometimes heard under the pub. Phantoms of a man, woman and young girl were also reported, and customers said to occasionally feel a presence close by. Ten years prior to these reports, two people staying at the pub were awoken by banging coming from behind a locked door on the third floor.

Father Sharrock

Further Comments: This priest was seen several times in the house and took to moving beds around - never waking the sleeping occupants in the process. The entity was exorcised shortly afterwards.

Screaming

Location: Failsworth - Wrigley Head (locally known as White Stuff), Moston Brook

Further Comments: A witness heard a chilling scream coming from Wrigley Head. They were later informed that the sound was common at night.

Cleaning Woman

Location: Farnworth - Blighty's public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom female has been seen wiping down tables, though she vanishes if approached.

Shadowy Spiral

Location: Farnworth - Chez Monaco
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: Staff witnessed a shadowy grey spiral which would appear around the building. They believed the shape to be the manifestation of a Victorian woman named Esther, buried in an adjoining graveyard, and who was known for her dislike of drinking and gambling.

Blue Lady

Location: Farnworth - Dixon Green Labour Club

Further Comments: This pretty lady with long flowing blonde hair is thought to have been killed during the civil war, and though extremely good looking, her appearance is considered an ill omen.

Children's Laughter

Location: Farnworth - Shakespeare Hotel (public house)

Further Comments: Glimpses of strange shadows and the sounds of children's laughter are said to be reported by customers at this pub. CCTV footage was said to have shown five different ghostly figures.

Chair Thrower

Location: Farnworth - Snack bar, exact location not known (no longer present)

Further Comments: Two members of a family living here experienced a horrible presence which manifested at night.

Farmer with Children

Location: Healey Dell - Prickshaw housing development
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The family were killed in a fire while living in the last terrace house. Their ghosts were reportedly caught on film by a photographer taking a picture of a woman on horseback outside the building.

Fire Starter

Location: Kearsley - Unidentified house, Primrose Street (area since redeveloped)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa April 1906
Further Comments: Smoke was spotted emerging from a closed dresser drawer and the smell of burning detected, but when the drawer was opened, no fire could be found. The following night, the dresser moved forward with ornaments thrown off.

Covered Figure

Location: Leigh - Fir Tree Flash, off Wigan Road

Further Comments: While walking her dogs, this witness spotted a nun-like figure standing over the pond. The witness looked briefly away to regain control of her dogs, and when she looked back the figure had gone.

Drowned Soldier

Further Comments: Returning to the area where he inhaled too much pond water, this ghostly figure deliberately creeps up to unsuspecting passers-by to scare them.

Laughing

Location: Leigh - Leigh College, gym
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This shade, which moves the climbing rope when in use, has been heard laughing and telling people to 'get off my foot'.

Laughing and Crying

Location: Leigh - Leigh Spinners Mill, Park Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2010s
Further Comments: A former cotton spinning mill, the site is now home to mysterious whistles which have been caught on EVP in the Engine House and the Heritage Room. Disembodied footsteps, children laughing, and crying have also been heard and icy cold blasts of air experienced.

Eyes

Location: Leigh - Platt Lane, Pretoria Pit colliery area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: It was reported that dozens of pairs of eyes would look out of bushes along this lane, and that they belonged to the 368 people who died in an accident at Pretoria Pit. Prior to this disaster, miners on route to work would sometimes encounter the sound of an invisible horse which ran past them.

Crying Children

Location: Manchester - 16 Wardle Brook Avenue (no longer standing)

Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Former home of the Moors Murderers, neighbours once reported the sounds of children crying, months after the pair of killers had been sentenced to imprisonment.

Mrs Potter

Location: Manchester - 35 Northern Drive, Collyhurst (no longer standing - area redeveloped)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: Two children were taken to hospital suffering from shock after seeing the ghost of Mrs Potter, a widow murdered in the flat two years previous. The presence told the girls to 'wait for me in this room' before touching one of them on the mouth.

Nothing Moving

Location: Manchester - 44 Penny Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: Owners of this establishment called the police when they heard lots of movement in the building when it should have been empty - after a long search, no one was found, and nothing was either moved or removed. The strange sounds continued for several weeks.

Bob Tailed Cat

Location: Manchester - Area around the canal near the Pomona Public House, Old Trafford

Further Comments: Anglers fishing in this area reported a cat the size of a cocker spaniel which often appeared at day and night.

Figures in Jumpsuits

Location: Manchester - Banks of the River Mersey, south Manchester
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 19 August 1979, 21:00h
Further Comments: Walking home with her two daughters, Lynda Jones and the children watched a twenty metre long orange/pink oval craft drop into a field. When they approached to take a better look, the ufo had changed to a grey colour and was hovering sixty centimetres above the ground. They all ran away after one daughter started screaming, and in later hypnotherapy Lynda recalled being abducted by almost human figures in jumpsuits.

Saint Ambrose Barlow.

Barlow and Others

Location: Manchester - Barlow Hall, Chorlton-cum-Hardy
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mostly unknown, but servant on clear moonless nights (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Several ghosts were reputed to haunt the hall. Saint Ambrose Barlow is said to walk the upper part of the hall, as is a (sometimes headless) woman. A servant who drowned in the lake after poorly executed practical joke went wrong sometimes returns to run towards the Mersey. A poltergeist-like entity carries coal and moves other items between rooms.

Footsteps

Location: Manchester - Bootle Street Police Station

Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: Footsteps have been heard by officers on the nightshift and an old timecard machine occasionally clangs as people walk past. A former female prisoner is said to haunt the corridor outside her cell.
