Charging Horseman

Location: Prestbury - Shaw Green Lane

Further Comments: Killed by a Lancastrian arrow in the 1400's, this glowing War of the Roses messenger is doomed to carry his cargo forevermore. Another story says he was decapitated by a thin wire that was placed across the road, while a different version of the tale claims the ghost to be a Royalist courier killed when he rode into a rope strung across his route.

Rising Woman

Location: Redbrook - Swan Pool

Further Comments: A local story says a woman and her young child were murdered near here, and the bodies thrown into the pool. Her shade now rises from the water, holding a crying baby. The area is also said to be home to a phantom coach, which has (a different?) woman peering from the window.

'Get out Quick'

Further Comments: A father exploring the tunnel with his three children heard a voice say 'get out quick'. No one else was present at the site.

Lavender Lady

Location: Sheepscombe - Butchers Arms public house

Further Comments: The pub and the surrounding area are haunted by a woman dressed in lavender or mauve coloured clothing. She is thought to be the woman responsible for closing several local pubs at the start of the nineteenth century.

Whispering

Location: Shipton Oliffe - Frogmill Inn

Further Comments: Still considered haunted today, though to a much lesser degree, the inn was home to strange mist and whispering voices. Three ghostly card players once appeared to a guest in one of the rooms.

Further Comments: Accidents or sudden death is said to have prevented treasure hunters from finding the hoard hidden somewhere here. Even if people have come close to finding it, strange noises have caused them to flee.

Elizabeth Davis

Further Comments: Formally known as Old Nell, this ghost had a name change after being identified as a landlady from the 1880s. She is described as friendly and enjoys moving items around the building.

Hooded Figure

Footfalls of Charles

Location: Snowshill - Snowshill Manor

Further Comments: This building was donated to the National Trust in 1951 by Charles Wade; staff believe that the sounds coming from behind closed doors are those of the former owner, though some think that the haunting predates his death.

Grey Figure

Location: South Cerney - Road towards village from Kemble

Further Comments: A five foot tall tornado/human-like figure was narrowly missed by a driver who swerved to avoid it. The witness said the entity was hovering about thirty centimetres off the road, was pointed at the base and formed human-like features further up, with a tail-like bit above the head.

Shadows in Doorways

Location: Stoke Gifford - Private residence, Mead Road

Date / Time: Early 1990s onwards
Further Comments: A former resident experienced the constant feeling of being watched in the lounge and spotting black shadows in doorways. Many years after moving out, the witness passed the building and spotted a woman approaching. The witness looked down for a second, during which time the figure vanished.

Horseman

Location: Stow on the Wold - A429 Fosse Way, heading towards Warwick

Further Comments: A driver reported glancing at her rear view mirror and seeing a horseman wearing a long black cape leap out into the road. The horseman was so close, the driver thought the rider would hit the car, but he vanished.

Victorian Gentleman

Further Comments: Dressed in Victorian clothing and wearing an old top hat, this man was seen twice in one day by a couple of friends out driving. The first time they encountered him, they narrowly avoided hitting the 'man'; while realising that there was something strange about him, they were not too sure what, until they drove back the same way a few hours later and glimpsed the figure again - this time he vanished in front of them.

Chapel Street, Stow on the Wold.

Pools of Water

Location: Stow on the Wold - House along Chapel Street
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: This pesky entity would create large pools of water throughout the house, with plumbers unable to find any physical cause. It also took to writing on the wall and tearing off the wallpaper. A voice was heard to say that the entity was a builder who had died twenty years previous.

Further Comments: The sounds of the piano can sometimes be heard in the building, though the instrument is not present. The ghost of an aged vicar is also reported here.

The Royalist Hotel, Stow on the Wold.

Victorian Children

Location: Stow on the Wold - Royalist Hotel

Date / Time: Late twentieth / early twenty-first century
Further Comments: Several ghosts are reported to haunt this building. A young man has been seen to vanish near the reception area, two children in Victorian clothing may be responsible for the strange tapping sounds, a pretty woman in a long dress and a cavalier both haunt the staircase, and a knight in black armour has also been observed on site.

The White Hart pub, Stow on the Wold.

George

Further Comments: This pub ghost is said to manifest as a shaft of white light, although occasionally it takes a human form. When the pub was redecorated in the 1990s, George was blamed for smashing light bulbs and switching on electrical items.
