Heavy Breathing

Further Comments: A former building here burnt down, killing several people. It is believed that the new buildings are haunted by those killed, and they can be heard moving around at night, breathing the thick smoke that claimed their lives.
Hooves on Gravel
Location: Shoeburyness - Countryside in area

Further Comments: While walking home through the nearby countryside, a woman reported hearing the overworked horses and the sound of crunching gravel. The site of the occurrence, upon investigation, proved once to be a brick yard.
Old Lady
Location: Shoeburyness - East Beach

Further Comments: Walking with his nine year old brother from a caravan park, this witness spotted an old lady heading towards them. Both realised that the woman's legs faded to nothing from below the knee - no feet were visible - although she appeared to walk normally.

Further Comments: The grey-haired phantom that haunted this flat was blamed for moving potted plants around while the occupants slept.
Dark Haired Young Lady
Location: Sible Hedingham - The Bell Inn, 46 Swan Street

Further Comments: The lady haunts one of the building's bedrooms and has been known to remove the bed covers of any who sleep in her room.
Runner

Further Comments: An invisible being has brushed past several staff and customers of this public house. The entity has also disturbed people by running down corridors and ringing the front bell.
Man Holding a Lantern

Further Comments: A man in period clothing carrying a Tilley lamp was spotted by five witnesses in a car. The figure appeared to be self-luminating and walked along the roadside, ignoring the car as it passed.
Breeding Stone (Pudding Stone)

Further Comments: Local legend tells the story of how smaller stones grow out of the larger one, and if the 'baby' stones are removed, more grow in their place.
Monk
Location: South Weald - The Golden Fleece, Brook Street

Further Comments: Seen in a mirror by a witness who ran screaming from the scene, the reason behind the monk's presence in the pub remains a mystery.
Grey Shape with no Eyes
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Clifton Court, Royal Terrace

Further Comments: The grey shape haunted the bedroom of one of the houses here, driving the owners away. An exorcism removed the spirit.
Tap on Shoulder

Further Comments: Working alone one night, a builder felt a couple of taps on his shoulder - turning around, he found no one there...
Monk

Further Comments: A ghostly monk is reputed to walk through this piece of parkland.
Depressed Bed
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Private house along Ambleside Drive

Further Comments: Whilst sleeping in the house, one person awoke to see an area of the bed depress, as if an invisible presence sat on it. After a minute or so the area raised suddenly.
Victorian Woman
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Private house along Hartington Road

Further Comments: This phantom woman in a Victorian dress was described as frightening by the witness.
Invisible Presence
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Private house along Orchard Side, Eastwood

Further Comments: The haunting presence here appears to have made itself primarily known to a baby in the house; the young child would appear to watch an invisible presence move around rooms, and on one occasion a parent observed the baby tracking the movement of the entity only to see a couple of cards on a high shelf fall over as the child looked up. Mild poltergeist effects were also reported by the occupants.
Frances
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Private residence along Ashburnham Road

Further Comments: Occupiers of this residence reported cold spots, the sensation of someone walking past them in the hallway, and doors which would unlock themselves. A male visitor to the property encountered the ghost of a young girl who stared at him for several seconds before fading away. The occupiers nicknamed the phantom 'Frances'.
Footsteps

Further Comments: Two different residents at this property are reported to have heard sounds of footsteps running across the landing. It was speculated that they belonged to a young girl.
Mr Barber
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Private residence in Southchurch area

Date / Time: 1996 to mid-2000s
Further Comments: A family living at this site reported seeing moving shadows without obvious source, poltergeist activity (including the throwing of a coffee pot), loud footsteps on the staircase, and the smell of pipe tobacco. The source of the activity was nicknamed Mr Barber.
Calf Sized Dog

Further Comments: A calf-sized dog walking on the other side of the road was spotted by the passenger in a car (although not by the driver), unnerving the witness considerably.
Flying Disc

Further Comments: A fighter pilot, while out on routine patrol, reported a near miss with a silver domed disc - the UFO travelled towards him at fantastic speed, veering off at the last possible second.
Person Holding Lantern
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Southchurch Lawn (was also Eton House School before closing in 1993)

Further Comments: Possibly the ghost of a smuggler, this spirit takes credit in saving the life of Princess Charlotte in 1801.
Self-Playing Harmoniums
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Southchurch Street, a three story Victorian flat

Further Comments: The sounds which came from the harmoniums, along with the phantom footsteps and banging, drove a couple from this flat.
Tall Man in Long Coat
Location: Southend-on-Sea - Southend pier, lower deck, near to the lifeboat house.

Date / Time: August or September 1992, 21:45hrs
Further Comments: The end of the pier has been the scene of several suicides, and it may have been one of these lost souls which were chased by a staff member - the entity vanished at the burnt section of the pier, where access is not possible.

Further Comments: One witness heard footsteps walking towards him and then through him down a corridor.
Gnomes
Location: Southend-on-Sea - The Shrubbery

Further Comments: Mrs Rose told Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that she frequently spotted fairies and gnomes in the shrubbery. The gnomes would take the form of little old men who wore green and assumed the role of guardians to the fairies.
