A female ghost was spotted here in the 1960s.

Box Carriage

Location: A31 - Hogs Back, Guildford bound. 1 mile Northeast of Tongham junction
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 08 January 2007, 22:40h, and 1960s (around 03:00h)
Further Comments: Travelling home in 2007, a driver watched a horse drawn box carriage cross the road around 100 metres in front of him. The witness reported that he could not make out too many details as it was raining hard, though he was able to see a dim lantern towards the front of the carriage. As the driver reached the spot where he had seen the vehicle pass, he realised there was no side road where the coach and horses could have crossed. Another witness in the 1960s spotted a female figure with long hair, wearing a white dress, standing by the roadside. The witness stopped to see if she was lost or needed a lift, but she had vanished. Mentioning the encounter to a work colleague the following day, the colleague described the figure which was encountered and said the area was haunted.

Red Bus

Location: A324 - Road heading towards Pirbright
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1995
Further Comments: Driving towards Pirbright in a convertible, this witness passed an old fashioned bus as it headed in the opposite direction. However, no sound came from the bus, and there was no smell of exhaust or wind turbulence generated as their paths crossed. The driver of the convertible also realised that his headlights did not reflect off the bus, which he later identified as 1920's Dennis J Type of the Aldershot and District bus company.


Phantom horses pass through a bedroom.

Night Coach

Location: Ash - Ash Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1938
Further Comments: The rector wrote that he had been awoken by the sounds of galloping and opened his eyes just in time to see a phantom coach and a team of horses pass through his bedroom. It was said that the phantom occurrence had also been experienced by previous rectors, and that the rectory was built on top of an old road.

Old Man in Green

Location: Ash Green - Ash Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1930s
Further Comments: This figure that appeared in one of the bedrooms looked real, though when a witness tried to grab him, he passed through the figure. Described as short, and looking like a tramp, the ghost had what appeared to be a slashed throat. The nearby fields are haunted by the sounds of galloping horses.

Saucer

Location: Bagshot - Two miles past Junction 3, heading towards London
Type: UFO
Date / Time: January 1985
Further Comments: Watched for between five and eight minutes, this saucer shaped craft had 'fifty pence piece type edges'. White lights could be seen at the front of the object, and blue lights at the rear.

Lord Hope

Location: Betchworth - Betchworth Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: While chasing an escaping prisoner, Lord Hope killed the man, who Hope later discovered was his son. Now the lord walks the area in regret.


A phantom lady in old fashioned clothing.

Female Figure

Location: Bletchington - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman in seventeenth century clothing is said to haunt this churchyard.

Major Peter Labelliere

Location: Box Hill - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Major requested that he be buried upside down near the summit of the hill. Even though his dying wish was carried out, this has not prevented Labelliere from roaming the area near his grave. A ghostly horse and rider have also been reported as haunting the area.

Young Girl

Location: Bramley - (Former?) antique shop, High Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This shop has a former doorway out the front which is now sealed up - a phantom girl is said to stand there.

Gypsy and Horse

Location: Bramley - Chinhurst woods
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A crossroads near to the woods is haunted by an old female traveller and her aging mare.

Buckland Shag

Location: Buckland - Stream near the village, and rock in the North Downs
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water monster set up home in this small body of water, until driven away by a local clergyman. A large rock located in the North Downs is still stained red with the bloody of the Shag's victims.

Crashing Car

Location: Burpham - A3
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: December 2002
Further Comments: Police called to the scene where several motorists had watched a car crash off the road discovered not a fresh accident, but one that had occurred five months previous. The car was in a ditch, making it impossible to see from the road, and the skeletal remains of the driver were recovered.

Former Maids

Location: Burstow - Smallfield Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The building is a magnet for female ghosts. A woman appears from a wall in the dining room, while another dressed in blue drifts about in the drawing room. The third female form has been seen outside the house; dressed in wedding lace, she vanishes near the pond.

My Spook

Location: Camberley - Private residence, Windermere Walk
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: A family visiting an older relative along this street witnessed a radio turning itself on unaided. The relative declared, 'oh, that's my spook!' and said similar events had occurred in the past.

Eight Men A-Leaping

Location: Caterham - Area around the A22
Type: Other
Date / Time: 28 July 1963 (dancing men), others 2000s
Further Comments: Several motorists reported eight figures dressed in black cloaks or cowls running and leaping around, heading towards the dual carriageway. The witnesses said that they moved strangely and silently. In the 2000s, stories began to appear concerning a ghostly woman in white along the road, either standing on the side or running out in front of cars.

Monk

Location: Caterham - Old Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Home to a ghostly hooded monk, the former rectory is also occasionally visited by an older man in Victorian clothing.

Old Lady

Location: Caterham - Private house along Godstone Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid- late twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly old lady was spotted on the staircase here.

Don't Talk

Location: Caterham - Tree on High Street
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Tree still present
Further Comments: Local legend says a witch was executed on this tree, cursing it while dying. Something untoward is supposed to happen to the loved ones of those who talk beneath the branches, while highly superstitious folk hold their breath while scampering past.

Footsteps

Location: Cheam - Century Cinema (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The phantom footfalls have been heard moving across the stage area, several previous managers mistaking the sounds for that of intruders.

Bishop Andrews

Location: Cheam - Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Bishop Andrews occupied this building in the reign of Elizabeth I, and was said to haunt the site for years after his death. While sightings of Andrews have diminished, now the rectory is said to be home to several spirits, including three Cavaliers.

Bare Feet

Location: Chertsey - Cedars Museum

Further Comments: The padding of naked human feet has been heard here.

Murdered Girl

Location: Chertsey - Golden Grove public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Killed by an evil local monk, this ghost still appears in the room where the crime occurred.

Monk

Location: Chertsey - King's Head public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1977
Further Comments: An Australian barmaid working at the pub awoke when her bedcovers were pulled off her by a phantom monk.

Location: Chertsey - Printers (still operational?) along Charles Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A printing establishment along this road was subject to poltergeist behaviour which interfered with their reprographic service.

Former Director

Location: Chertsey - Private organisation in northern Chertsey (no longer present)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 2012
Further Comments: Following the death of a director notorious for working until 20:00h, office workers would hear his office door slam closed on the top floor, the lift ascend before descending to the ground floor, and the front door finally rattling.
