Shropshire Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana


Location: Bridgnorth - Crown and Raven Inn

Further Comments: This inn is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a chambermaid. While living, the woman discovered her husband was having an affair and, in a fit of rage, murdered the adulteress. The chambermaid was hanged for the crime.

Further Comments: Screaming was once heard emerging from an empty cellar.

Secret Cavern

Location: Bridgnorth - Hermitage Caves
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An old tradition said that there was a secret cavern under the caves which led to a chest of treasure and another exit located somewhere on the other side of the Severn. The floor of the cave was thoroughly dug in 1877 in an effort to find the hidden entrance, but the search found nothing.

Black Lady

Location: Bridgnorth - Magpie House Restaurant (now Bassa Villa public house)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom's children were drowned in the cellar of Magpie House when the River Severn broke its banks. The woman in black has been observed moving around the building and is sometimes heard crying.

Giant Arm

Location: Bridgnorth - Road from Cleobury North, around one mile from Bridgnorth
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1830s
Further Comments: A woman and her friends were travelling back to Bridgnorth in a horse-drawn carriage when the creature suddenly stopped. The woman climbed from the carriage and tried to motivate the horse but was flung on the ground by an unseen force. A giant arm and hand then manifested, wrapped around the horse's neck. The distant ringing of church bells caused the arm to vanish, with the horse able to resume the journey. The woman later discovered that her aunt had died at the same time the arm had appeared.

Date / Time: Mid-twentieth century, September 2004
Further Comments: Arnold was the name given to the ghostly figure seen by Mr and Mrs Reynolds, who believed he would manifest to warn of an impending accident. It may have been the same entity spotted by a soldier on duty during the Second World War. More recently, a phantom steam locomotive has been reported, although this 'ghost' could have been generated by activities surrounding the local annual steam gala.

Man in White

Location: Bridgnorth - Swan Inn

Further Comments: A man dressed in white clothing is said to manifest once the building has been closed for the night.

The Black Lady

Location: Bridgnorth - The Cartway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sight of the phantom woman in black clothing who haunts this area is said to have unnerved many a person, and it is said some locals still avoid the area at night (just to be safe).

Woman in White

Location: Bridgnorth - White Lion Inn
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom woman in a long white dress is reputed to manifest before an impending death.

Black Dog

Location: Broomfield - General area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A gentleman who committed suicide in the village is said to have returned in the form of a large black dog.

Talking Faces

Location: Broseley - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1986, 1988
Further Comments: One person at this property watched two faces, which spoke, appear in a wall. Other people reported seeing a servant girl manifest on the end of a bed. A couple of years later, witnesses outside spotted a man standing by a window, although the property was empty. Disembodied footsteps were also reported.

Woman with a Candle

Location: Broseley - Ruined churchyard (restoration work to begin in 2022)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This white figure, seen wearing a poke bonnet and carrying a candle, appeared in front of three witnesses before quickly disappearing. A photographer claims to have captured her on film, though this author has yet to see the image.

Undone Work

Location: Broughton - Old church (no longer stands)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The old church here had to be constructed away from the planned site after the workmen constantly found all their previous day's work undone. The Devil was blamed and after moving the building site, no more delays were experienced.

Black Monk

Location: Buildwas - Buildwas Power Station (aka Ironbridge Power Station)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: Built partly on the site of a ruined abbey, several workers at the power station have reported seeing a ghostly black monk walking around the modern building. One employee also reported seeing a phantom woman floating in his path who vanished before his eyes. Both audio and visual paranormal experiences have been reported by residents from Leighton village. (Image copyright 2006 Lawson Clout)

Bottled Ghost

Location: Burleydam - Combermere public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend says that a ghost was bottled and buried under the steps of this pub by two clergymen. When the steps were replaced hundreds of years later, no bottle was found.

Bleeding Builder

Location: Cardington - Plaish Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: After Judge Leighton sentenced a builder to die, the judge agreed to lessen the punishment if the man helped build a new chimney stack on Leighton's roof. The builder agreed, but after the work was complete the judge hanged the man from the chimney before entombing the corpse within it. The chimney occasionally drips blood, and the ghost of the builder (sometimes accompanied by an unknown woman) is still said to walk the hall. Another legend attached to the site says a group of clergymen met one night to play cards. The devil appeared, and all but one man ran away - his friends later found a man-sized blood stain on the floor that could never be washed away.

Further Comments: The ghost of a Royalist on horseback is said to ride silently around the lanes leading to this village.

Madam Pigott

Location: Chetwynd Aston - A41, and Chetwynd Hall & surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1969
Further Comments: Having died in childbirth, Madam Pigott was seen dozens of times carrying her baby and combing its hair. Some also reported the lady also having a cat with her. She was eventually exorcised by twelve parsons, though in 1969 two motorists separately reported a white figure on the road near the church.


Location: Child's Ercall - Pool
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: This mermaid was so upset at the way she was treated by onlookers, she drove to the bottom of the pool and never returned. It was thought that she guarded a mass of treasure.

Further Comments: Those who walk twelve times around the church at midnight on this date shall hear the names of the villagers due to die within the following twelve months.

Major Smalman

Location: Church Stretton - Area around Wilderhope Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1965
Further Comments: A diehard Royalist, Smalman's home was once besieged by Roundheads during the latter stages of the Civil War. The Major managed to escape on horseback, his ghost now seen galloping away from the building. The manor itself is also reported to be haunted by both Smalman and the shade of a young girl who smiles at any witnesses before screaming horribly.

Rustling Woman

Location: Church Stretton - Area once known as Copper Hole (north of village, close to Hazler Road/B4371 junction)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1882
Further Comments: A man walking from the village towards Hope Bowdler spotted a woman moving slowly behind him. He stopped to let her catch up with him, and even though she appeared to be walking, she never moved any closer. The man could hear the rustling of her dress but no footsteps. He paused his journey a couple more times, and finally the woman moved towards him, only to drift silently through a hedge and out of sight.

Wooden Legged Man

Location: Church Stretton - Bottle and Glass Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of a man with a wooden leg has been heard walking around this public house.

Falling Down

Location: Church Stretton - Halzer Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The screams of a young girl haunt an old copper mine, where she fell to her death down an open shaft.

Wild Edric

Location: Church Stretton - Hills around the town
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The large hound with eyes that glow red like hot coals is said to be a manifestation of Wild Edric, local hero and protector of Britain.
