Headless Men

Romans hiding Treasure

Further Comments: Murdered by an angry mob, these Romans all died before any could reveal where they stashed their gold. While their ghosts are now said to show the location of the treasure, those who see them die before they can share the secret.

Never-ending Flow

Further Comments: The harbour was created when a warlock attempted to recover lost treasure from a well - the well's guardian was angered and caused the water to ceaselessly flow.

Treasure

Location: Brading (Isle of Wight) - Tree (no longer standing) in the area once known as Centurion's Copse
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: The treasure was said to have been buried under a tree which once stood here. The only way to uproot the tree and recover the hoard was to chain twelve white oxen to the tree and have the creatures uproot it. Unfortunately, the tree was chopped down, so the treasure remains hidden.

Treasure Hunter

Location: Braishfield (Hampshire) - Dark Lane, and the surrounding area

Further Comments: The area is reportedly haunted by the shade of an Edwardian woman looking for a hoard of treasure she hid while living in a building along the road. She is said to be more likely to be seen by dogs, which react by howling for no apparent reason, rather than people.

Gold Guard

Location: Bridgend (Mid Glamorgan) - Ogmore Castle

Further Comments: Protecting hidden treasure, this shade once attacked a man who tried to take all the gold - he died soon after of a wasting disease. It is not known whether the spectral woman who has also been seen here is the same ghost, although most legends say she does guard the hoard, which in turn is said to be haunted by the wailing of its former owners. Another legend says that whoever falls asleep here may wake in the past or future.

Secret Cavern

Location: Bridgnorth (Shropshire) - Hermitage Caves

Further Comments: An old tradition said that there was a secret cavern under the caves which led to a chest of treasure and another exit located somewhere on the other side of the Severn. The floor of the cave was thoroughly dug in 1877 in an effort to find the hidden entrance, but the search found nothing.

Black Monk

Location: Bristol (Somerset) - All Saint's Church

Further Comments: Many believe that this ghostly monk in black has returned to watch over a pile of treasure which was hidden during his lifetime. The figure has been spotted several times over the last two hundred years, most recently around Christmas 1948 when he was seen walking down the church aisle.

Further Comments: A large black bird was once said to protect a pile of hidden gold within the castle grounds. The hoard could not be moved unless the bones of Lord Beauchamp, former owner of the gold, were in possession of the treasure hunter.

Excalibur

Location: Broomlee Lough (also referred to as Bromley Lake) (Northumberland) - Waters of the lake

Further Comments: The lake is another contender for the claim for being the resting place for King Arthur's sword. Another legend says the lake is home to a treasure that can only be retrieved by a chain made by a seventh generation blacksmith that is pulled by a team of twin horses, twin oxen, and twin youths.

Sir Henry Paget

Location: Burton upon Trent (Staffordshire) - Sinai House

Further Comments: The ghost of Sir Henry, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, is one of many phantoms claimed to haunt this site. Other spooks include participants from the English Civil War and a white (or grey) female form that stands on the moat bridge. Another piece of folklore claims the Knights Templar concealed a large portion of their treasure somewhere on the site, including the Holy Grail.

Butley Priory, Suffolk.

Robert Brommer

Location: Butley (Suffolk) - Butley Priory - gatehouse

Further Comments: Robert Brommer committed suicide in Ipswich after falling heavily in debt to the king. After a couple of burials and removals, his remains were finally laid to rest at a crossroads along the nearby Hausen Street. His spirit took exception to the movement and has since been reported in the gatehouse. A piece of local folklore says the third Earl of Suffolk, who died at Agincourt, is buried in a silver coffin somewhere on site.

Goblet of Gold

Further Comments: A goblet of gold (or it could be filled with gold) is hidden in this area. Thomas the Rhymer declared that the treasure could only be found during a full moon by two brothers, one of whom would kill the other.

White Lady

Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Castell Coch

Further Comments: A 'new' building on the site of thirteenth century ruins, the White Lady once haunted the older area, and now has set up shop in the replacement castle. The woman is said to have died of a broken heart after her son drowned in a local pond. There is also reported to be a buried hoard of treasure here, zealously protected by either three eagles or an entity who confuses any potential gold thieves, while an ethereal cavalier walks the castle grounds.

Little People

Further Comments: Once a popular place for pixies to frequent and dance, they have not been seen in recent years. They are said to be protecting a concealed hoard of gold. A large rock in the area was said to feature a tiny footprint.

Treasure Under A Stone

Location: Carn Glas (Highland) - Rock on the mountain

Date / Time: Said to have occurred early nineteenth century
Further Comments: A man had a dream that if he went to the mountain on Monday morning, he would see a crow sitting on a stone, and under this stone would be treasure that once belonged to a Norwegian prince. Unfortunately, the man was impatient and set off early, arriving Sunday evening to find hundreds of crows, each sitting on a different rock.

King Gerennius

Location: Carne (Cornwall) - Carne (or Veryan) Beacon barrow

Further Comments: King Gerennius was thought to have been buried here within a ship of gold that used silver oars, though when the barrow was opened in 1855, no ship was found.
