Cyclist

Location: West Ashby - A153
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: During the early part of the twentieth century, a man driving a horse and cart home reported his horse bolting after approaching a cyclist who travelled on the wrong side of the road. When the horse was brought under control, the cyclist had vanished. Another source stated that between 1988 and 1998 there were three accidents along the road caused by vehicles swerving to avoid a bike, although the bike could never be seen after the event.

Crying Lady

Location: West Deeping - Church

Further Comments: The date of this woman's death is marked by her phantom sobs heard emanating from the church. Her husband was so distressed by the death that he took his own life the following day (see Tallington, Lincolnshire).

Pop

Location: Wickenby - Wickenby RAF base (World War 2)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Second World War
Further Comments: Michael Bentine, of The Goon Show fame, worked here during the war. After a period of leave, Bentine headed towards his hut and walked past a friend and fellow officer known as 'Pop', whom he greeted. Pop nodded his response and continued walking. The following morning, Michael discovered Pop had died two nights previous. A nearby building is also reported haunted, this time by a WAAF officer who killed herself after her boyfriend died during a bombing raid over Germany.

Wrong House

Location: Wigtoft - Sparrows Hall (?)

Further Comments: Supposedly haunted by a woman bricked up in a room after she died, this house developed the reputation as one of the most haunted in England. When psychical researchers tried to find the house in 1967, they decided the property called Sparrows Hall that they found could not be the correct house, leaving them searching for a different (and possibly now lost) site.

Woofer Boggard

Further Comments: Several poachers out hunting heard laughter overhead as they travelled down this lane. They fled the scene, convinced they had encountered the Devil.

Drop and Run

Further Comments: An old folk tale states that by dropping a pin through the keyhole of the church and running around the building seven times, the Devil will be met.

Rabbit-sized Demon

Location: Willoughton - Country lane

Further Comments: This sober witness stated that, while cycling, a small bipedal creature with horns ran out in front of him, travelling just as fast as the bicycle. It disappeared as it hopped on a grass verge.

Hairy Jack

Location: Willoughton - Exact location not known

Further Comments: Known locally as Hairy Jack, the black dog which haunts this area is said to be covered in pigs' hair. A local man was said to have been pushed into a gatepost by an invisible dog after it placed its paws against his shoulders.

Clawed Stone

Location: Winceby - Boulder near area known as Slash Hollow
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Moved to the side of the field in 1970
Further Comments: The stone was finally buried by a farmer, who dug a hole next to the boulder and pushed it in. A failed previous attempt had resulted in the Devil appearing who scratched the stone with his claws. The stone was believed to have been placed on top of treasure, however when the stone was finally moved to one said, no treasure (or Devil) was found.

Tall Man in Black

Location: Winteringham - Bottom of Suttons Hill, also known as Hewde Lane, once known as Puddingpoke Lane

Further Comments: This tall male figure appeared at the base of the hill during foggy days. The entity followed one young woman home; she ran into her house and observed the phantom watching her from the road outside before he vanished.

Miller

Location: Winterton - Old Mill House

Date / Time: Pre-1950s
Further Comments: One story claimed this house to be haunted by a miller who threw his wife down the staircase, killing her. He spent the rest of his life, and afterlife, in regret, walking around the area trying to find her alive. In 1955, one owner said the ghost had not been seen for many years, since the property was modified.

Pet Photograph

Location: Woodhall Spa - Former Second World War airfield

Date / Time: 1940s (photo) and 1980s (pilot)
Further Comments: A photograph of a group of airmen revealed a black dog standing at the end of the line-up that was not spotted at the time by neither the photographer nor any of the pilots. It was later suggested the entity was Guy Gibson's pet dog that had been run over a few months before. During the 1980s, a team of engineers working at night spotted a pilot in 'old flying gear' walking along a corridor. One of the team went to investigate, only to find that the pilot had disappeared.

Man in Tricorn Hat

Further Comments: A man wearing a cloak and a tricorn hat is said to drift through this wooded area. A phantom woman in white and the sound of wailing have also been reported.

Dambusters

Location: Woodhall Spa - The Petwood Hotel

Further Comments: The famous team enjoyed drinking here during active service, and it is said they can still be heard drinking here over half a century later.

Green Lady

Further Comments: This phantom green lady was said, on one occasion, to have left behind a memento in the form of a ring, although what happened to the jewellery is not known.

William the giant and his stones.

William the Giant

Location: Wroot - Thumb Stone and Little Finger Stone (no longer present?)

Further Comments: These two boulders were thrown into position by William, the local giant and wizard. A farmer who tried to move one using six horses failed to do so, and all the horses died shortly after their attempt - it became known that to mess with the stones was unlucky.
