Lady Hobbingdon

Location: Hindlip (Hereford & Worcester) - Hindlip Hall (original building no longer standing) and grounds
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The shade of the Lady, together with a phantom white calf, would be seen moving around the house revealing all the secret priest holes once a year - during life she performed the same task, feeding those who hid within. The grounds are now said to be haunted by a young girl wearing a tartan dress, quietly crying and looking for her mother.


 
Hunt

Location: Burnley (Lancashire) - Eagle's Crag, Cliviger Gorge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Lord William Towneley and his dog appear once a year, giving chase to a nimble doe. Another variant of the tale names the hunter as Gabriel Ratchets, while yet another story states that a man and his wife manifest on the same date - he killed and buried her on the spot.


 
Returning Maid

Location: Abbots Langley (Hertfordshire) - Churchyard and Vicarage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This young girl, who died suddenly, rises from the grave once a year and returns to the vicarage. Opinions differ on whether she is a former vicar's daughter or a maid mistreated by a vicar's wife.


 
Monk and Author

Location: Hitchin (Hertfordshire) - Minsden Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The chapel is reputedly haunted by a phantom monk, and a local author also threatened to haunt the location. Mr Reginald Hine, at the start of the twentieth century, said he loved the place so much that he threatened to haunt the church in order to protect it from any redevelopment work. An unconvincing photograph does exist of the phantom monk.


 
Lady Fleetwood

Location: Fleetwood (Lancashire) - Rossall School
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This pallid woman is reported to traverse the school grounds once a year.


 
Sow with Litter

Location: Bransby (Lincolnshire) - Bonnewells Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This spectral sow with her young appears along this lane on Halloween. The same stretch of road is also haunted by a woman in a silken dress which rustles as she moves, and there have been reports of a shuck.


 
Leaping Woman

Location: Amble (Northumberland) - Cliffs close to Cliff House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A ghostly woman leaps from these cliffs, fading away before she hits the sea below.


 
Black Dog

Location: North Shields (Northumberland) - Milbourne Place, now Smith's Dockyards
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The area near the docks is haunted by the ghost of a sailor who was murdered by his parents, who failed to recognise their own son after his many years at sea. He returns in the form of a large black dog, patrolling the area where the crime was committed.


 
Roll Call

Further Comments: Those who walk twelve times around the church at midnight on this date shall hear the names of the villagers due to die within the following twelve months.


 
Pack of Hounds

Location: Todmorden (Yorkshire) - Area between Todmorden and Mankinholes
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Wailing at the moon, this pack of devil dogs, known locally as Gabriel Ratchets' run over both land and water looking for people to terrify.


 
Blind Peter

Location: Netley (Hampshire) - Netley Abbey ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring) Grey Ladies seen
Further Comments: On Halloween three misty women appear and walk along the ruins walls. The sounds of bells can also be heard on this night. Another presence, Blind Peter, is less choosey on the date on which he appears, and wanders around the ruins of the abbey. There is a legend that a secret underground passage was sealed after the last man to enter it emerged shortly after, screaming 'block it up!' before dropping dead - the passage may be connected to the tales of treasure buried on site.


 
Those to Die

Location: Crowcombe (Somerset) - Church
Type: Other
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring) or Midsummer Eve
Further Comments: Anyone watching the church at midnight on Halloween would see the spirits of those fated to die over the forthcoming twelve months.


 
Headless Monk

Location: Erith (Kent) - Lesnes Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring), last seen 1981?
Further Comments: The monk was caught with a woman and killed for his crime. The entity now returns once a year, and may have last been seen in 1981 by a teenager who would search the woods near the abbey for old pots and pipes. After returning home one night from the woods, the teenager reportedly spotted a monk in a brown robe holding a lantern on a hooked pole outside his window. The abbey is also home to phantom horsemen, and Roesia of Dover who is looking for her heart (it was buried here by her father).


 
House with Glowing Windows

Location: Thirlmere (Cumbria) - Armboth Hall & Thirlmere lake
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring), Wedding party occurs
Further Comments: After a murder of a newly wed bride, this house was left to fall into ruin - though some people reported that a glowing candle moves past various windows and a wedding party occurs. The Hall is now lost below the waters of the flooded valley of Thirlmere Lake, which is home to a phantom dog which swims through the water.


 
Polly

Location: Great Maplestead (Essex) - Crossroads
Type: Other
Date / Time: 31 October Halloween (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Polly Mills' body was discovered in the castle lake and, as she was believed to be a witch, was buried at a crossroads in the village. It is said every Halloween, a posse of fresh flowers appears by her grave.


 
Man in Black

Location: Dilton Marsh (Wiltshire) - High Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October / November (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Wearing long black leather boots and coat with a wide brimmed hat, this phantom man is said to swagger towards the Prince of Wales pub but vanishes just prior to arriving.


 
Wine Smashing

Location: Birmingham (West Midlands) - Court Oak public house, Harborne
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 31 (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: Nicknamed Corky by visitors to the Court Oak, this phantom is said to smash bottles of cheap wine in the cellar. Corky is also said to manifest behind the counter, appearing in the form of a male in his sixties.


 
Ringing

Location: Whitby (Yorkshire) - Off coast, close to Black Nab
Type: Legend
Date / Time: October 31 (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: A ship carrying bells stolen from the abbey was sunk at the Black Nab while trying to escape. On halloween, one can stand close to the rock and call out their love's name. In return, the wind repeats the name and the bells can be heard to ring.


 
Chimes without Wind

Location: Beenham (Berkshire) - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October and November (reoccurring)
Further Comments: One resident reported that around this time of year strange things would happen - wind chimes in the bathroom would be vigorously shaken, lights flick on, and a young man has been spotted in a former bedroom.


 
Fire

Location: Warminster (Wiltshire) - Cley Hill
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Varies: 31 October & 2 November (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Several witnesses have reported seeing large burning fires on the hills, with figures dancing around them, talking and singing loudly in an unrecognised language. When investigated, there is never any evidence of the fire or figures. A legend says the hill was created by the Devil, who threw down a pile of dirt on the spot after being led to believe that it would take him several years to reach Devizes.


 
Witch in Poke Bonnet

Location: Canewdon (Essex) - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Witch varies, blue woman seen 1987, and 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A woman with a poke bonnet but no face is reported to appear on moonless nights and travels through the west gate heading towards the river. Once there, the entity walks across the water. A woman in a blue dress was briefly glimpsed in 1987, though quickly vanished when the witness jumped up from her seat. Legend also says if you round run the church three times anti clockwise on 31 October, you travel through time. Finally, a stone is said to fall from the church tower every time a local witch dies.
