What could be seen as an early UFO sighting, a man walking along the beach on 29 March, 1890, watched a localised 'fog bank' sitting on the sand, with a huge flagpole sticking out. After ten minutes, the object rose and faded from view.

A drummer in the army, one night Toby became so drunk he left the local public house to rape and murder the first woman he came across. He was hanged for the crime, and now haunts the nearby area. Some say he appears driving a coach pulled by four black horses, others state he just walks along banging his drum in regret. It is most likely 'Toby' was created by local smugglers to deter others from investigating their activities.
