Roman Battle

Location: Bowerchalke - Between village and Woodminton

Further Comments: Headless horses can be seen, and fierce fighting can be heard - the area was the site of a battle between Roman legionnaires and the Britons.

Pallbearers

Location: Bowerchalke - Bowerchalke Down, aka Marleycombe Hill - Applespill Bridge area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Seven ghostly men carrying a gold coffin have been reported crossing the bridge - a local legend says that a coffin made of gold was found and stolen from a nearby barrow. Another ghost carrying a bag of jangling coins also walks the area, normally following people around.

Monks

Location: Bowerchalke - Churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - most likely to be seen in the early hours
Further Comments: A phantom procession of monks reportedly haunt the churchyard.

Kit

Location: Bowerchalke - Crossroads south of the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The woman only known as Kit is buried at this crossroads after committing suicide nearby. Her shade is still reported here, and it is claimed no birds sing in the area.


A lost figure in snow.

Lost Shepherd

Location: Bowerchalke - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This man became lost in a snowstorm and was found dead of exposure the following day by fellow villagers. His voice is occasionally heard on the wind, crying out 'I want to go home'.

Silence

Location: Bowerchalke - Kit's Grave, crossroads at Vernditch
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman who drowned herself in a well is said to be buried at this crossroads. The surrounding area is reputed to be devoid of birdsong.

Sounds of Beheading

Location: Bowerchalke - The Lodge (no longer standing?), Verne Ditch (or Vernditch Chase)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of a chopping axe have been heard coming from the ruins of this property. They are said to date from a particularly nasty murder, when the victim had their head removed.

Ghost Train

Location: Box - Railway tunnel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of a phantom locomotive echo along the tracks in this tunnel.

Morris Minor

Location: Box - Shockerwick bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight
Further Comments: This blue Morris Minor appears without warning, forcing drivers to collide with it, though no impact occurs.

Black Monk

Location: Bradenstoke - Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom black monk is accompanied by a dog of similar colour.

White Lady

Location: Bradford on Avon - Beehive Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This incorporeal woman has been reported in various parts of the inn.

Tinkling the Ivory

Location: Bradford on Avon - Fat Fowl restaurant
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The piano in the restaurant is said to occasionally play a note or two under its own accord, while cutlery is moved, and doors close by unseen hands.

Luck of Iford

Location: Bradford on Avon - Iford Manor
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Luck still present, humming in 1970s
Further Comments: A copy of the Geneva Bible is also known as the Luck of Iford. It was said that if the book were removed from the manor, the building would fall into the nearby River Frome. Other strange stories from the site include sound of a young person humming and quiet whispers heard in the building. One witness briefly spotted a ghostly blonde-haired girl with a blue dress.

Shadowy Figures

Location: Bradford on Avon - St Lawrence's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 1992
Further Comments: In the early twentieth century a priest watched a group of people in medieval clothing moving around the church, though normally only one figure is spotted at any one time. In 1992, a group of tourists photographed and videoed a glowing white shape in the church, though they were unaware of its presence at the time.


Not everyone likes visitors.

Woman

Location: Bratton - Flower Farm (demolished 1967)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1967
Further Comments: This ghostly woman was said to be quite evil, and resented visitors to the farm. She wore dark clothing and preferred to haunt the staircase.

Funeral

Location: Bratton - Unknown road in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom horse drawn funeral procession occasionally passes by the area.

John Aldridge

Location: Braydon - Former forge, renovated to become a private house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: The former village smith, named as John Aldridge, was seen outside this house by a group of young people. They described him as wearing working clothes and carrying a large sack which was slung over a shoulder.

Battle of Mount Badon?

Location: Braydon - Ringsbury Camp
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Circa 500AD
Further Comments: The camp is another place nominated as the site where the Battle of Mount Badon was fought, between Arthur and the Britons, and Anglo-Saxons.

Maud Heath

Location: Bremhill - Maud Heath's Causeway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1986
Further Comments: Named after the woman who paid for the causeway, Maud sometimes returns to walk the path she invested her money into.


A long-haired phantom.

Long Haired Figure

Location: Broad Blunsdon - Road near the 'Fork-ed Elm'
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: Two men driving past this spot encountered a white figure standing by the roadside. The figure had long hair but the witnesses could not define the sex, and the most striking aspect of the entity was it appeared to float thirty centimetres above the ground.

Ear Twister

Location: Broad Hinton - Crown Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Late 1970s
Further Comments: At least three people reported having their ears twisted by an invisible presence.

Young Man

Location: Bromham - Battle House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: Little is known about this ghostly young man, other than a former owner, Mrs Starkey, said that the entity resembled her son when he was younger.

Woman in Evening Dress

Location: Bulford - Road through the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghost moves from a driveway and crosses the road without any consideration towards oncoming traffic. One lorry driver was convinced he had struck a real woman, only to pull over and see her pass through a barbed wire fence.

Cursed Stone

Location: Bulford - Stone along a bend in the River Avon (stone no longer present)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Pre-1960s
Further Comments: A stone on the riverside was considered cursed, and it was believed could not be removed (until it was).

Black Dog

Location: Cadley - Fields between village and Marlborough
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A black dog may haunt this area.
