A phantom green woman.

Green Lady

Further Comments: The phantom green woman which was once said to haunt here has not been reported for many years.


Avebury Manor, Wiltshire.

White Lady

Location: Avebury - Avebury Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A white lady drifts around the grounds of the manor and sometimes the nearby henge and stone circles. The phantom woman's face is covered by a large hood. The inside of the manor house is said to be haunted by several other entities. One spirit would scatter rose petals across the floor of the Crimson Room, and a phantom monk was once spotted in the library. A ghostly Cavalier also occasionally makes an appearance.

The Haunt

Further Comments: Houses constructed from stones mined locally are thought to be unlucky and subjected to poltergeist-like activity from an entity known as 'The Haunt'.

Location: Avebury - Bus shelter along Swindon Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October 2009, 20:15h
Further Comments: Three local people spotted the silhouette of a person standing in the bus shelter as they walked towards it. As they approached closer, the figure disappeared, with no reasonable explanation to where they could have gone.


The churchyard in Avebury, Wiltshire.

White Figure

Location: Avebury - Churchyard

Further Comments: A witness on a bicycle spotted a large white figure in this churchyard. Other stories tell of phantom monks, a female form, and a ghostly young boy dressed in Victorian garb spotted in the same area.

Crossing the Road

Further Comments: This large stone is reputed to cross the road at midnight.

Tall Blonde Men

Location: Avebury - Field close to Silbury Hill
Type: Other
Date / Time: 06 July 2009
Further Comments: An off-duty police officer spotted what we thought were three forensic officers, tall with blonde hair wearing white coveralls, walking around a newly formed crop circle. He went to investigate, but as he reached the edge of the field, could hear crackling electricity. The officer tried to enter the field, at which the men in white ran off quicker than any human could run.

Lady in White

Location: Avebury - Footpath by Trusloe Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: A government worker walking from Avebury Manor reported encountering a ghostly woman in white lace and a white hood at an iron gate close to Truslow. The witness said the woman appeared from nowhere, took his shoulders, and spun him around before pushing him away.


The Red Lion pub, Avebury.

Florrie

Location: Avebury - Red Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2004 (Florrie), other stories unknown
Further Comments: The wife of an English Civil War veteran, Florrie was strangled and tossed down a nearby well by her husband once he discovered she had slept with other men while he was away fighting. She now haunts the public house, scratching anyone who upsets her. The sounds of a phantom coach have also been heard outside the building. In 2004, it was claimed a photograph taken captured the image of a bleeding bald man, although the image was later found to be faked.


Silbury Hill, Avebury.

Burial

Location: Avebury - Silbury Hill
Type: Other
Date / Time: Hill still present
Further Comments: The largest man made mound in Europe, no one can say for sure why the hill was built, though one group has alleged that it was the only way the builders knew of immobilising a great evil. The ghost of King Sil is also said to ride around the base of the mound on moonlit nights, which is likely to be connected to the belief that a horse and rider of solid gold are contained within. Finally, another ghost, this time headless, is said to haunt the base.

Mystery Lights

Location: Avebury - Skies above area

Further Comments: Some say that UFO sightings here go back at least three hundred years, though only more recently have crop circles and photographs of glowing balls of light been documented.


The Standing Stones across Avebury, Wiltshire.

Angry Stones

Location: Avebury - Standing Stones
Type: Other
Date / Time: Stories from fourteenth Century onwards? Fayre observed during First World War
Further Comments: Locals claim that these stones have an air of ill luck surrounding them, with several bizarre accidents occurring in their presence. At night, phantom singing has been heard going from the circles. Another person claims to have seen a medieval fayre in progress while she stood in the circle.


The Lodge, Avebury.

Georgian Gentleman

Location: Avebury - The Lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-2009
Further Comments: Stories tell of several phantoms said to inhabit this building, including children, a young woman, a man in Georgian style clothing, a voice speaking in French and a coach drawn by four horses. A former owner of the property believed the building to be the most haunted house in England, though the current occupier has not encountered anything and is a little more cynical.

Grey and Blue Ladies

Location: Avoncliffe - Cross Guns public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2004
Further Comments: This pub is haunted by a woman in blue, a grey lady and an old man. Some have speculated that the sightings were on the increase due to building work that was occurring in the pub.

Sounds of Children

Location: Badbury - Fields around Berriccot Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1961
Further Comments: A woman walking her dog with her two children heard children laughing, though no youngsters could be seen. The sounds upset the dog, and suddenly ceased when she walked through a gate (though started again when she walked back through the same gate).

Monk with Smallpox

Location: Baltonsborough - St Dunstan's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This monk was supposed to have travelled from France to see meet his dying father at the church, however he contracted smallpox and himself died before completing his journey. His ghost now haunts the church, regretting his failing.

Man in Tricorn

Location: Beckhampton - Road running through village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: A phantom highwayman is reputed to haunt this road. There is also a story that a ghostly horse and coach have been heard along the Beckhampton Road.

Golden Coffin

Location: Berwick St John - Winklebury Camp, also known as Winkelbury Camp
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A golden coffin is reputed to be buried in the area. Another legend says that if you walk around the hill seven times while swearing, the Devil will appear to grant you a single wish.

Hanged

Location: Biddestone - Church graveyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The graveyard was once said to be haunted by a person hanged on the site.

Beast of Biddlestone

Location: Biddlestone - General area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Another ABC hotspot, dozens of witnesses have encountered a large black cat in the region over recent years. In 2007, a group of off-duty police officers and their families spotted the creature; they described at the cat as being the size of large dog but with a lower profile.

Thyme

Location: Bishop's Cannings - Area known as 'Thyme Tree' between village and Coate
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Possibly an area difficult to find (as there is no thyme nor tree there), the gentle smell of thyme is said to mark an area where a woman was murdered.

Headless Hound

Location: Bishops Cannings - Churchyard
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dragging a chain, this decapitated dog crosses the churchyard.

Fast Moving Man

Location: Bishops Cannings - Lane behind churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century? Said to appear at dusk.
Further Comments: This phantom figure moves at speed and is said to have a bag thrown over one shoulder.

Lady

Location: Blundsdon - Blundsdon Abbey (ruins)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The residents of the house built over the ruins of the abbey would often see the ghost of a lady moving across the courtyard at the front of the property, though only visible from the waist up. Phantom monks have also been seen.

Wet Footprints

Location: Boscombe Down - RAF base
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1947
Further Comments: A pilot killed when his new aircraft crashed into the sea was heard walking about his hut at night, his wet footfalls slopping on the floor.
