Gwent Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Black Dog

Location: Garndiffaith - Varteg Road, Coombs Cross
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century, 00:30h
Further Comments: One witness claimed to have encountered a black dog while walking along the road. The witness tried to stroke it, but his hand passed through the creature. The dog then walked alongside the man until he reached Coombs Cross, when it jumped eight foot (2.4 metres) into the air and disappeared into the cemetery.

Built in a Night

Location: Grosmont - Bridge between Grosmont and Kentchurch
Type: Legend - Old Nick

Further Comments: The Devil agreed to build a bridge between the two locations over the river Monnow, but on condition that he would have the soul of the first creature to cross. Before using the bridge for the first time, a local woman threw a bone for her dog across the bridge - the canine ran to fetch it, and thus cheated the Devil of his human soul.

Jack o'Kent

Location: Grosmont - Churchyard wall
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local folk hero who constantly tricked the Devil, Jack was finally laid to rest under the churchyard wall to prevent Satan from taking his soul.

Playful Boy

Location: Llancaiach Fawr - Llancaiach Fawr Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The presence of a young boy who fell to his death within the building is still felt and has made his presence known by tugging on people's clothing. There are also reports of lurid, ghostly faces staring from the walls.

Mira Turner

Location: Llanelli - Llanelly House (aka Llanelli House)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After being accused of having an affair in the house, maid Mira Turner was found dead at the bottom of a staircase. An inquest declared it to be suicide, although others believed it could have been an accident or murder. Regardless of the verdict her ghost is said to haunt the site. Another ghost is that of a distressed older man, who may be responsible for the heavy footfalls occasionally heard.

White Woman

Location: Llanelly - Cemetery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1880
Further Comments: The area was said to be haunted by a white woman who floated above the ground, although when one witness ran after the figure (as opposed to running away, like so many others), he managed to wrap his arms around it - the 'ghost' was a woman playing pranks on gullible locals.

Very Tall Man

Location: Llanfihangel Llantarnam - Unidentified lane close to a field
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Edward Frank was said to have encountered a tall, thin ghostly man here. The ghost stood so high that Edward almost fell backwards trying to look up to the figure's face. The ghost vanished after Edward called out the Lord's name and threatened to hit the entity.

Thomas Cadogan

Location: Llanfihangel Llantarnam - Unknown Lane in the village
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Landowner Thomas Cadogan died shortly after adjusting his property's borders to absorb some of his neighbours' lands. A local woman walking home after dark came across his ghost standing by a stile. She engaged the entity in conversation (forgetting the man had recently died), during which he confessed the theft of the land and asked the woman to restore the borders. Once the land had been to the rightful owners, Cadogan's ghost never returned.

Dancing Fairies

Location: Llangua - Llangua church, fields behind

Further Comments: Witnesses here watched a troupe of fairies dancing in the fields behind the village church. Once the merriment ceased, the fairies headed off towards the wood.

Dancing Fairies

Location: Llanhilleth - Barn named Ysgubor y Llan (likely no longer standing)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: While lying in this barn, John Rosser heard music and watched a company of fairies enter and dance around. The fairies danced until morning and then vanished.

Misleading Old Woman

Location: Llanhilleth - Mountain in the region
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This spooky old woman calls out to walkers, trying to lure them from the footpaths so they become lost. She can be recognised by her large four cornered hat and the large pot she carries.

Fairy Funeral

Location: Llanhilleth - Road towards the church
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Not only did Isaac William Thomas witness a fairy funeral, but he also reached across the bier and removed the veil which he kept. This fine fairy cloth was supposed to be very light and could be folded down to next to nothing.

Cwn Annwn

Location: Llanhilleth - Unidentified road in the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Cwn Annwn, a pack of hell hounds, were heard as they passed a local man as he walked home. The invisible dogs were heading towards the nearby river.


A pumpkin-sized ball of fire in the marsh.

Will o' the Wisp

Location: Llanthony Valley - Hill in the area
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1920s, summer
Further Comments: A man returning home on bicycle at night watched a pumpkin-sized ball of fire rise from a piece of marshy land. The ball moved in a circle at ground level before quickly crossing fields, smoothly leaping any fence which stood in the way. The ball vanished into trees.

White Woman

Location: Llanvihangel Crucorney - Between Llanvihangel Court and Lady Wood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but only at midnight
Further Comments: This pallid figure moves from the hall and disappears into the nearby wood. There have also been sightings of a short man dressed in green.

Monks

Location: Llanvihangel Crucorney - Llanthony Priory, in the Vale of Ewyas
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This location is said to be haunted by the monks that once walked here. The Blaenavon Paranormal Investigation Team have reported recording EVP and observing a grey figure.

Swimming Stone

Location: Michaelstone-y-Fedw - The Druidstone, on the grounds of Druidstone House
Type: Legend
Date / Time: When a cock crows during the night
Further Comments: This stone, standing over three metres in height, goes for a swim in the nearby river if woken up at night.

Footfalls

Location: Mitchel Troy - Road towards the common
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely twentieth century
Further Comments: A married couple out walking late at night heard footsteps dragging behind them. When they stopped, the footsteps stopped. When a car approached them and illuminated the area, no other person could be seen.

The Damned

Location: Monmouth - Cemetery
Type: Vampire
Date / Time: 1980
Further Comments: A sighting of a cloaked, vampire-like entity seen standing next to the cemetery in 1980 was explained 38 years later when Dave Vanian of The Damned admitted he went for a late night walk after recording at Rockfield Studios. As he walked through the cemetery dressed in a black cloak, he was spotted by the driver of a mini who almost crashed. The story of the cloaked figure appeared in the press a few days later, and Vanian decided not to say anything.

Bright Light

Location: Monmouth - Monnow Street
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown, likely early twentieth century
Further Comments: A man walking home in the early hours of the morning heard what sounded like a horse slowly following him. As the sounds drew alongside him, the man was blinded by bright lights which overtook him, vanishing into a nearby closed garage.

Horse

Location: Monmouth - Monnow Street, around Chippenham House area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The echoing sounds of a horse trotting have been heard, though the reasons why are not clear.

Small Woman

Location: Monmouth - Private residence (no longer standing), Granville Street
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to death in the family
Further Comments: A phantom short woman who would appear next to people's beds with her head cocked would foretell a death in the family.

Fires

Location: Monmouth - Private residences, Brook Crescent
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely 1950s or early 1960s, only lasted a brief period
Further Comments: Two properties here experienced items moving on their own accord, including lights bulbs which were removed from sockets and placed nearby. A couple of small fires broke out in one of the properties, after which the poltergeist appears to have departed.

Black Haired Figure

Location: Monmouth - Road toward England, close to 'leaving Wales' sign
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 2003, around 02:00h
Further Comments: The driver of a coach spotted a woman, dressed in black with long hair, on the hillside to the left who quickly descended and appeared to walk straight into the vehicle's path. The driver's colleague, sitting by the door, shouted that they had hit her - also convinced that they had, the driver stopped the coach. Very shaken, the pair disembarked, expecting to see a body. Nothing could be found. The driver later mentioned it to a friend, who said they had heard of a similar incident in the area.

Fred

Location: Monmouth - Savoy Theatre

Further Comments: The theatre is reputed to be haunted by an entity nicknamed Fred.
