Strange Creatures from around the Isle

Serpentine Beast

Location: Skegness (Lincolnshire) - Area of sea between town and Maplethorpe
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1930s and beyond
Further Comments: This creature, or possibly creatures, has been reported on and off for many years now - its humped form moving quickly and quietly through the water.

Camel Headed Creature

Location: Skerries of Work (Orkney) - Sea in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1910
Further Comments: The arrival of this creature was introduced by a school of whales leaping from the water and fleeing the area. The head and neck of the sea monster reached out of the water at the height of a small sailboat.

A Sea Man

Location: Skinningrove (Yorkshire) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Pre-nineteenth century
Further Comments: A man was caught in the sea by fishermen and kept for many weeks in a cottage where he lived on a diet of fish. After a while, the 'sea man' returned to the sea, waving goodbye to people standing on the coast before diving down and never returning.

Bear

Location: Skipwith (Yorkshire) - Skipwith Common
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: February 1975
Further Comments: A man reported seeing a dark brown bear standing 150 centimetres high. No trace of the creature could be found later.

Washed up

Location: Smerwick (County Kerry) - Beach
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 18 November 1839
Further Comments: Following a storm, a sea creature (curiously described as a sea orangutan) washed up on the beach. From head to toe, the creature measured 4.14 metres, and when stretched, the creature's arms spanned 3.4 metres. A newspaper said the creature to be 'a frightful looking devil'.

Afanc

Location: Snowdon (Gwynedd) - Llyn Glaslyn
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1930s
Further Comments: Witness Oliver Vaughan spotted the pale head of strange animal in Llyn Glaslyn, which was thought to be an Afanc, a lake monster from Welsh mythology.


Brenin Llwyd, or Grey King.

Brenin Llwyd

Location: Snowdonia (Gwynedd) - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The Brenin Llwyd, or Grey King, could be classed as a hairy man entity. It has scared dogs and is weary of any kind of light.

Hungry Worm

Location: Snowdonia (Gwynedd) - Llyn-y-Gadair
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Eighteenth Century
Further Comments: A group of men swimming across this lake were attacked by a large worm-like monster. One of the people was grabbed and consumed by the beast.


A strange serpent on the sand.

Speared Serpent

Location: Solway Firth (Dumfries and Galloway) - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After finishing off the local fish population, a large serpent came ashore and started snacking on the local population. Survivors set a trap for the creature; a long line of sharpened wooden stakes were placed along the waterline, which the beast impaled itself upon.

Glassy Eyed Mermaid

Location: Sound of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - Sea
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: Becalmed in their skiff after setting out from the Sound of Mull, two men spotted a creature in the water which had the head, neck and upper torso of a woman, although the hair was coarser and the eyes glassy.

Monkey

Location: South Cockerington (Lincolnshire) - Mill Hill Way
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 13 August and 15 August 2010
Further Comments: On two separate occasions, two different police officers reported seeing a monkey along this road. Both described the creature as 'a similar size to a squirrel, dark brown in colour with a long, straight, upright tail'.

Man-Like Monster

Location: South Mimms (Hertfordshire) - Bridge along Wash Lane
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Circa late nineteenth / early twentieth century
Further Comments: A man crossing the bridge watched as a human-like creature rose from the ground and leapt over the bridge, vanishing into the mist. The witness fled.


Off the coast of Southwold, Suffolk.

Long Grey Creature

Location: Southwold (Suffolk) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 21 October 1938
Further Comments: While casting their nets, two fishermen watched a long creature around thirty metres away. They stated that the beast was grey in colour, moved at great speed, and estimated the length to be around twenty metres. However, a story later appeared in the local press that the 'creature' was nothing more than several pieces of lumber bound together.

Wild Man

Location: Sproughton (Suffolk) - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 16th Century
Further Comments: The wild man is thought to have been a hermit rather than a large hairy hominid. A local pub was named after the man.

Crocodile

Location: St Asaph (Clwyd) - Cefn Caves
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1870
Further Comments: Measuring around one hundred and forty centimetres in length, a crocodile was said to have been killed by a local man in this cave.

Rabbit Hunting

Location: St Audries (Somerset) - Unnamed area near the town
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: February 1994
Further Comments: John Corbett reported seeing a wolverine hunting rabbits close to St Audries.


A Welsh Water Horse.

Large Water Horse

Location: St Brides Bay (Dyfed) - Shore line
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After being caught by a ploughman, the water horse allowed itself to be used as a plough horse on nearby fields for a few weeks. Once it grew tired of the work, the creature dragged both plough and man into the sea from which they never emerged.

Tarbh-uisge

Location: St Kilda (Outer Hebrides) - Small loch
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This mythical water bull was said to live in a lochan on St Kilda until it was killed by the islanders. It was said that any calf born with small or deformed ears was thought to be from a union between a Tarbh-uisge and a cow.


The Great Auk. Obviously a witch.

Great Auk

Location: St Kilda (Outer Hebrides) - Stac-an-armin
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1840s
Further Comments: The last known Great Auk sighting in the UK took place on the little island of Stac-an-Armin. The unfortunate bird was beaten to death by three men who mistook the creature for a witch that had summoned a storm.

Blocked Door

Location: St Levan (Cornwall) - Pendower Cove
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Having just dropped anchor in the bay, the captain of a ship was surprised when a mermaid stuck her head out of the sea and asked if the anchor could be moved, as it had landed on the entrance to her home. The captain was happy to comply.

Long Sea Beast

Location: St Margaret's Bay (Kent) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1912
Further Comments: This sea serpent was observed moving swiftly through the water, vanishing from view after a sailing boat moved too close to it.

Howling Creature

Location: St Pierre du Bois (Guernsey) - Rocquaine Bay
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: prior to a storm
Further Comments: Heard but never seen, a creature was said to howl close to the reef when a storm was due.

Cow Bone

Location: Stanion (Northamptonshire) - Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The church is home to a bone just under two metres in length, which is claimed to have come from a giant cow. The cow would provide free milk for the whole village until approached by a jealous witch who made the creature try to fill a perforated bucket - the cow dropped dead of exhaustion.

Goat Man

Location: Staverton (Northamptonshire) - Layby along A425
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 20 February 2022
Further Comments: The occupant of a car reported seeing a thin bear-like creature standing on its hind legs (also described as a man-goat) that briefly became illuminated in their headlights. The creature stood six foot (1.8 metres) tall, had short legs, and crossed the road before disappearing from sight.

Bluish Creature

Location: Stonehaven (Aberdeenshire) - Sea
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: October 1898
Further Comments: A skipper of a fishing boat reported seeing a creature which resembled an upturned boat with fins and a small hump. The visible part of the body was some 68 foot (21 metres) long, although the tail was not visible, and while resembling a whale, the skipper said the head was much flatter than a whale.
