Strange Creatures from around the Isle

Monkey

Location: Bath (Somerset) - Brassknocker Hill and surrounding area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1979 / 1980
Further Comments: There was a brief flat of monkey sightings here, the creature said to stand between 3 - 4 feet high (90 - 120cm) and had bright rings around its eyes.

Tall Hairy Creature

Location: Beckermet (Cumbria) - Nursery Woods
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 25 January 1998, most recently 1 October 2005
Further Comments: A man walking his dog reported seeing a man like creature, just over two metres tall and covered in ginger hair, drinking from a pond in the woods.

Pterosaur?

Location: Beckermet (Cumbria) - Nursery Woods
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: A witness reported a large pterosaur-like creature flying above Nursery woods.

Fear Liath Mor

Location: Ben MacDhui (aka Ben MacDhui, Mac Dhui) (Highland) - High on Mountain
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Popularly referred to as Britain's yeti relation, the Fear Liath Mor has been heard, seen, and felt by dozens of mountaineers over the past 150 years. The sound of snow being compacted by large feet has made climbers scarper back down the slopes; those who have seen the creature say it is more man than ape, but still covered in grey or brown hair, with long arms and a large head, and standing around twenty foot in height. During the Weird Weekend 2009, researcher Andy Roberts presented a compelling argument that the Fear Liath Mor is more a feeling of dread than a biological entity.

Blobster

Location: Benbecula (Outer Hebrides) - Shores
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1990
Further Comments: A dead four metre long creature was washed up on the beach, with diamond shaped fins sitting along its back - the creature could not be identified.

Green Shark

Location: Berwick on Tweed (Northumberland) - River Tweed
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 16 September 1757
Further Comments: A 1.8 metre long shark was discovered in this river, green in colour and no doubt a long way from home.

Tailed Bigfoot

Location: Bilington (Kent) - Field near the town
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: May 1961
Further Comments: Two girls walking from school reported seeing a large hairy figure running into nearby woods, complete with an unmistakeable tail.

Sandwell Vallygator

Location: Birmingham (West Midlands) - Sandwell Valley
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1999
Further Comments: An American snapper which had either escaped or been set free was first spotted at a valley lake in 1999, though it took a further two years to catch the creature.

Good Looking Woman

Location: Birsay (Orkney) - Rocks along coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: A wife and husband witnessed a mermaid sitting on the rocks, described as 'good looking' by the wife. The couple tried to capture the creature, but it swam away.

Dragon Train

Location: Blandford Forum (Dorset) - Fields in area which were replaced by railway station (now Edward Street / Alexandra Street area)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Seventeenth century
Further Comments: Baron Ryves was said to have had a vivid dream of a fiery dragon which passed roaring over his land, its chest filled with holes in which people could be seen. The creature disappeared into the ground. The area of land later became a railway line and tunnel. Prophetic or coincidence?

Tall Monkey with Glowing Eyes

Location: Bolam (Northumberland) - Bolam Lake
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: A late night fishing party reported seeing an eight foot creature standing upright, with radiant eyes.

Unseen Tarbh-uisge

Location: Borerary, St Kilda (Outer Hebrides) - Exact location not known
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: During one dark and stormy evening one of several men sheltering in a hut wished that he had a fat ox. No sooner had he wished for one, there could be heard a bull just outside. However, all in the hut were too terrified to look and see what had appeared. It was only next morning when they ventured out, they found plenty of cloven hoof track but no sign of what had left them.

Tasmanian Wolf

Location: Bournemouth (Dorset) - Western Avenue, Branksome
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 07 April 1974
Further Comments: A strange cat-like creature spotted by a female driver was later identified by her as a Tasmanian wolf, though the creature is thought extinct.

Gliding Hound

Location: Boxley (Kent) - The Street
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Circa 1988, dusk
Further Comments: The passenger of a van observed an Alsatian-sized dog as it glided towards the vehicle before reaching a hedge, where it stood upright on its rear legs. The passenger and dog watched each other until the van turned a corner and out of sight.

Big Bird

Location: Bradford (Yorkshire) - Skies above town
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1982 / 83
Further Comments: A large bird seen in the skies above the town was originally identified as an eagle or an escaped condor by its witnesses; twenty years later a few of them claimed it to have been a pterodactyl.

The Kerry Carabuncle

Location: Brandon (County Kerry) - Mount Brandon - Lough Veagh and/or Lough Geal
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This lake is home to a mythical snake-like beast which is covered in jewels and gold. The monster is said only to appear once every seven years.

Grey Horse

Location: Brecon (Powys) - River Honddu
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: Home of a Welsh water horse, this creature who tempt people to sit on it before terrifying the rider by dragging them over rough land and through the air.

Red Flying Squid

Location: Broadford, Isle of Skye (Highland) - Coast near the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 12 January 1952
Further Comments: Constable John Morrison kicked a squid he found on a beach, only for the creature to wrap a 180 centimetre tentacle around his ankle. The policeman managed to remove his boot and killed the cephalopod with rocks and a set of shears.

Monstrous Fish

Location: Broadstairs (Kent) - Sandy area, was known as Fishness
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1574
Further Comments: A twenty-two yard (twenty metre) long fish washed up on the beach, the creature's roar being heard over a mile away before dying. One of the creature's eyes was said to be 'more than a cart and six horses could draw'. It is very likely the 'fish' was a whale.

Monster's Grave

Location: Brynberian (Dyfed) - Prehistoric burial ground
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The people of the village once found a water monster in a nearby lake - they took the creature and buried it on the mountain slope.

Buckland Shag

Location: Buckland (Surrey) - Stream near the village, and rock in the North Downs
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water monster set up home in this small body of water, until driven away by a local clergyman. A large rock located in the North Downs is still stained red with the bloody of the Shag's victims.

Sea Serpent

Location: Bude (Cornwall) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: October 1883 and/or October 1911
Further Comments: This creature was reported by the vicar of the local parish - he reported it moved at around 25 miles per hour and left an oily wake.

Smelly Creature

Location: Burra Haaf (Shetland) - Waters in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1900s
Further Comments: Several reports of a creature with a sail-like body and a flipper on the end of its nose exist in this region of water off the Shetland Isles. A fishing crew who encountered it stated the beast destroyed several of their nets and came so close to their boat they could detect a pungent stench.

Swan Eater

Location: Burscough (Lancashire) - Martin Mere
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: An unknown large creature was seen to attack several swans from beneath the water of the lake - it is believed to be a type of large catfish, which can grow up to sixteen feet in length. There has also been at least one mermaid sighting in the lake, and Sir Lancelot's body is supposed to be buried nearby.

Water Monster

Location: Cadair Idris (Gwynedd) - Llyn Cau (lake)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Eighteenth century
Further Comments: Rumoured to be a bottomless lake, the waters are reportedly home to a water monster that once drowned a man foolish enough to try to swim across it.
