Nottinghamshire Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Tall Figure

Location: Bulwell - Private residence
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2007 onwards
Further Comments: The Nottingham Ghost Investigations team have reported several entities haunt this site, including a tall figure in a trench coat, a small blonde haired girl, a shadow man, a teenage boy, and an old man named Bill. Items have been thrown about and unexplained voices, footsteps and bangs reported.

Former Owners

Location: Bunny - Bunny Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The hall is reported to be home to several ghosts; a couple of the spooks once resided at the building, while the others were either visitors or workers on the estate.

Footsteps

Location: Burton Joyce - Railway Signalling Box
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Staff at the box have reported hearing someone walking around beneath it before starting to climb the steps, but no one would ever appear.

Tom Shadwell

Location: Calverton - Admiral Rodney public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Tom was the innkeeper here until 1875 and is still thought to haunt the building. There are also reports of phantom children heard around the site, a ghost named Sarah (a former serving girl) who now performs mildly irritating poltergeist-like tricks, and a man in a black suit dating around the 1940s.

Scared Workmen

Location: Calverton - Calverton Hall (no longer standing), Main Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: This haunting entity was less than impressed when its home was knocked down to make way for the Miner's Welfare building (also no longer standing) and scared two of the workers away. The area is now known as Old Hall Close, and the phantom woman is said to stand on the side of the nearby road.

Oppressive Atmosphere

Location: Calverton - Folk Museum, Main Street
Type: Other
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: People in the building have reported an oppressive and malicious atmosphere, though nothing is ever seen.

Person on Back Seat of Car

Location: Calverton - George's Lane and George's Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century, 2016
Further Comments: A ghostly entity is reported to materialise on the back seat of passing cars in both these locations - on the lane the figure takes the form of an old lady, and on the hill the figure wears a black hooded garment. Normally the witness only sees the entity in the rear view mirror; when they turn around, the figure has vanished. In 2016 a cowled figure was spotted in a car park on two separate occasions.


The ghost with a ginger beard.

Ginger Bearded Man

Location: Calverton - Main Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The main road leading through Calverton is said to be haunted by two ghosts - a man wearing a tweed suit and sporting a ginger beard walks along the path, while a phantom white lady waits patiently at a bus stop.

Black Cowled Figure

Location: Calverton - Watchwood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer, 2016
Further Comments: The black cowled figure seen by one witness was initially not considered to be a ghost until it vanished behind a tree so slim that it would have been impossible to hide behind.

Stone of Dismissal

Location: Carlton - Devil's Stone (outside the church?)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: In a reversal of the normal tale associated with these stones, if a witness spotted the Devil nearby, she or he had to run around the stone to dismiss Old Nick. The stone was also said to be haunted by a woman in white who was sacrificed on it.

Man in Horn Rimmed Spectacles

Location: Carlton - Private residence, Foxhill Road (original house no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: A witness in this house found a man in the corner of his bedroom. The man wore horn rimmed spectacles, had thick combed back hair, and after making eye contact with the witness, just faded away.

Bakery Disturbance

Location: Carlton - Tesco
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An old graveyard was moved when this store was built - the bakery was said to have been erected on the former hallowed land and was the subject of a poltergeist outbreak until the Rector of St Paul's church carried out an exorcism.

Elderly Lady

Location: Caunton - Beesthorpe Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The presence of an elderly woman was considered non-threatening until the kitchen was modified. The entity became audible, moving around the corridor and on the staircase, and was finally exorcised.

Murdered Man

Location: Chilwell - Chilwell Hall (demolished 1952)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1840-1860
Further Comments: Thought to be a peddler murdered in fields nearby, this phantom would make strange noises throughout the area at night. Locals believed a married couple who had killed the peddler lived at the hall, although the suspects disappeared and the police did not investigate the crime. Subsequent residents of the hall reported seeing a little ghostly figure wandering the building, and the hall eventually fell into ruin.

Sturgeon

Location: Clifton - Clifton Hall
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Fish seen prior to death in family, ghosts reported during 2008
Further Comments: The Clifton family are warned when one of their number will die when a sturgeon is seen swimming upstream of the Trent. Businessman Anwar Rashid moved his family out of the building after he claimed to hear screaming at night, spotted phantom figures in the bedrooms, and unexplained blood spots appeared on his youngest child's clothing.

The Maid?

Location: Clipstone - Archway House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to be home to several former servants, one of these phantoms was observed walking out the kitchen into the snow, where it left no footprints.

Pan Basher

Location: Clipstone - Dog and Duck public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: This spirit has banged pots and pans, turned on taps, and created strange thumps in the cellar.

Coughing Man

Location: Clipstone - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2007-2012
Further Comments: Several strange figures were encountered in this house but multiple witnesses, including a young man with a bowed head, a shadowy figure possibly wearing a helmet, and a coughing man wearing dirty clothing. Crashing sounds and dragging would be heard at night, but nothing would be found moved. A glass bowl cracked in the kitchen during a conversation about the ghost.

Spheres

Location: Coddington - Between Balderton and Coddington
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Sometime between 2004 and 2011, 20:05h
Further Comments: A freedom of information request made to Nottinghamshire Police showed that they had received a call from a woman travelling back to Coddington from Balderton. After her dog started to bark, she spotted two clusters of misty spheres on the ground some 200 yards (183 metres) in front of her. The spheres then floated to her right over open fields before gaining attitude and disappearing.

A Godson

Location: Coddington - Private cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1983
Further Comments: An entity of small stature, possibly a member of the Godson family, is reputed to haunt this building.

Young Girl

Location: Coddington - Vicarage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Only seen once (but since felt), this young girl is thought to be a Victorian servant. The presence is non-threatening.

Singing

Location: Colston Bassett - St Mary's church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ruins of this church are said to be haunted by the gentle ringing of bells (long since removed) and of hymns being sung. Candlelight has also been spotted in the church, though upon investigation the building is always empty and unlit. A strange moaning is heard underground and was thought to come from a concealed tunnel.

Sounds of Battle

Location: Cotgrave - Colston Gate, open road flanked by fields
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 10 February 1994, 02:00h
Further Comments: Two friends were walking through the area on a cold frosty morning. There was a sudden gust of wind, followed by the sounds of shouting, horses galloping, and the clash of swords. Both witnesses were scared by their encounter.

Faceless Miner

Location: Cotgrave - Cotgrave Colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 1987
Further Comments: Gary Pine, while at work in a mine shaft, watched a man dressed in black clothing wearing a helmet walk through a wall. Pine said that the figure had no face.

Nanny

Location: Cromwell - Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1984
Further Comments: This Victorian phantom dressed as a nanny was seen by a witness as she bent over his bed. The site is also haunted by a young boy spotted on the staircase and a serving girl seen outside the front door.
