Bordered by Scotland, Northumberland is England’s most northerly
county, and once formed part of the kingdom of Bernicia. The sixty
miles of coastline, persistently beaten by the North Sea, is surprisingly
sandy, though broken by the occasional cliff line. Part of Hadrian’s
Wall runs here (the other section falls into Cumbria), built by
Romans to fend off the Scottish hordes, and now itself
protected as a World Heritage Site. The county is one of the few
in the UK to possess an account of a vampire which terrorised a
neighbourhood in the county.
