Gliding Woman
Location: Chirton - Unnamed road leading down to the river
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: A tall elderly woman in a black dress and bonnet, accompanied by a black dog, was encountered by a miner walking towards the river. The phantom emerged from a hedge and touched the top of the man's head, paralysing him, before drifting back fro where she had come. The snapping of a twig broke the man's petrification, and he ran off.

Lovesick Woman
Location: Cleadon - Windmill on the Cleadon Hills

Further Comments: This woman leapt from the windmill after being jilted by her lover - her shade is still said to linger in the area.

Grey Lady
Location: Craster - Craster Tower

Further Comments: Condemned to walk the same path for evermore, the grey lady enters the front door before walking up the stairs to the drawing room. Another pair of ghosts have been heard duelling, their swords clashing outside the building, while others say the invisible wheels of a coach crunch on the driveway.

Wicked Priest

Further Comments: This ghost was once bricked up in the castle's walls, however the wall was knocked down, and the spirit freed to create havoc.

Further Comments: This house has said to be haunted by the sounds of children laughing and enjoying themselves.

Further Comments: Named after the sound of her silk dress, this spirit was often heard moving around the premises. The ghost may be that of a mistress of a former Duke of Argyll.

Lady Derwentwater

Further Comments: Waiting for the return of her husband, Lady Derwentwater has been gazing out of one of the windows. Her spirit is also said to stalk the nearby woods.

Strange Toilet

Further Comments: A cleaner claimed to have heard the sounds of a boy falling to his death near the staff toilet, while several staff refused to go near the area, as they have heard a phantom voice call out 'Maria'.

Brown Man

Further Comments: A stocky dwarf like figure, the brown man looks after the local wildlife, and has been known to kill anyone who persistently harms the natural balance.

Winter
Location: Elsdon - Winter's Gibbet

Further Comments: The last man displayed on a gibbet in England, Bill Winter now haunts the place he was displayed for the crime of murder. A local legend states that wood from the gibbet can be used to banish toothache.

Sir Guy the Seeker
Location: Embleton - Dunstanburgh Castle

Further Comments: Sir Guy's spirit can not be laid to rest until he rediscovers the maiden that he once stumbled upon while hiding in these ruins from a storm. Another ghost on site is the Earl of Lancaster, who was executed on the site (though the executioner was so incompetent it took almost a dozen blows to remove the Earl's head). Finally, a woman lies enchanted somewhere in the ruins, and will awaken when the 'right knight' blows his horn.

Screaming Spirits
Location: Farne Islands - General area

Further Comments: St Cuthbert exorcised all the evil spirits which once dwelled on the island when he came to the islands. Sometimes one or two make a return, screaming their protests before vanishing again.

Grace Darling
Location: Farne Islands - Longstone Lighthouse

Date / Time: 1976
Further Comments: Grace became a notional hero after helping her father, a lighthouse man, save nine people from a stricken steamer during the nineteenth century. Although she died in 1819, two keepers in the 1970s claimed to have heard her walking around the engine room.

Wedding Party
Location: Featherstone - Route between Pynkinscleugh & Featherstone Castle

Further Comments: To celebrate a wedding, the guests, bride and groom went out hunting; it resulted in a fight that killed most of them, and now they all travel back to the castle once a year, covered in blood.

Lady in Green
Location: Featherstone - Featherstone Castle

Further Comments: This figure in a green & brown dress glides along the corridors of the castle. Another ghost, that of Sir Reginald FitzUrse, haunts a tower where he was held prisoner (and starved to death), while sometimes a phantom wedding party is seen in the courtyard.

Man in Grey
Location: Forest Hall - Rose Villa

Date / Time: 1933 - 1936 (and onwards?)
Further Comments: Over a three year period, the occupiers of the house and their friends reported that it was quite common to see a phantom man dressed in grey walk up the driveway and disappear around the corner of the house. The sightings stopped after loud numbers of people descended upon the site wanting to watch the ghost.

Further Comments: A table of solid gold is said to be hidden somewhere in or under this castle, protected by a gruesome dwarf.

Further Comments: A small army of hunters patrol the skies over the wall, searching for souls.

Further Comments: The wild hunt is said to pass through this way, driving all the local pets mad. The same area is also home to a phantom bridal procession, dressed in medieval garments.

Further Comments: This old man often came and played his harp at the castle, so much so that the master of the building decided that the minstrel was a spy and had him killed. This was not the case, and now the musician's grey form is now seen about the castle.

Further Comments: A local villain once had a hideout on this site - he was followed from a scene of a crime and killed here. There have been sightings of the man himself, though more recent are the sounds of sword play in the farm house.

Drowned Girl

Further Comments: Appearing on the date of her murder, this young girl silently drifts over the lawn towards where the lake once lay. On version of the story says the phantom girl screams (or it could be the wind).

Further Comments: A woman walking her dog watched as a large black cat crossed the road in front of her before vanishing into bushes.

Black Cylinder

Further Comments: Four people watched a black cylindrical object, possibly rotating, for ten minutes as it crossed the sky. The object changed direction once, moving north to south before turning west.
