The Scole Experiment

Further Comments: A team of seven people spent a five year period collecting and recording physical evidence to support the Life After Death theory. Their evidence included writing and faces manifesting on unexposed film and apports in the form of jewellery and other small items.

Highwayman's Girlfriend

Location: Scole - The Scole Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This woman was murdered by a jealous partner after he discovered that she was having an affair with a highwayman; the ghostly lady in white now walks the staircase and the first floor.

Figure in Great Coat

Location: Scottow - Three Horseshoes public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s, 2000s
Further Comments: Once seen sitting in the corner of the pub, this figure is more likely to be heard walking around or blamed for turning electrical items on and off. It is thought a female entity also haunts the building, as her perfume is sometimes caught on a gust of wind, and once she was spotted on the stage area.

Grey Smoke

Location: Sea Palling - The Old Hall Inn, Waxham Road
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A weird column of grey smoke was spotted in the inn by the manager's wife during the mid-twentieth century. There are other reports of a ghostly woman wearing grey clothing and the overpowering stench of strong tobacco.

Man on Fire

Location: Shelfanger - Wash Lane, near the church and ford
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: A ten year old girl travelling with her mother in a car was horrified by the appearance of a burning man who ran in front of the car.

Sound of Stones

Location: Sheringham - Cliffs
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: The bodies of twelve sailors were buried in a gap in the cliffs; the corpses were covered with stones and left, rather than being taken to the nearby church. Now when the weather is right, the sound of the bodies being buried can be heard.

Dancing Girls

Location: Sheringham - Close to St Peter's Church, Church Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 12 May 2009, 00:30h - 00:40h
Further Comments: A witness reported seeing four or five girls holding hands and dancing in a circle. As the witness approached, the figures grew fainter, until they were no longer visible.

Shock

Location: Sheringham - From the sea
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The black dog known as Shock to residents of the town would emerge from the sea and run up the hills. The entity was said to be headless, with white cloth covering the stump.

Shrieking Woman

Location: Sheringham - General area
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to disaster sweeping the town
Further Comments: This phantom harbinger's screams would be heard across Sheringham, normally before a heavy storm or some form of disaster.


Sheringham coast, Norfolk.

Yow-Yows

Location: Sheringham - Not far off the coast
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Yow-Yows are ghostly sailors who drowned off the coast of Sheringham - they could have been saved, but no local man was willing to make it so. Before a storm hits, these shades cry out for help, hoping to lure the living into a watery grave.

Bench End

Location: Sheringham - Parish Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: A carved wooden bench arm is in the shape of a mermaid. A notice in the church said that, in days of olde, a mermaid tried to enter but was turned away by a mortified crowd. She later snuck in undetected and remains to this day.

Dog and his Owner

Location: Shipdham - Crossroads at Blackmoor Road & Cranworth Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The dog died at the crossroads waiting for the return of his master, while the master himself died of a broken heart after losing his family after a prolonged absence from home.

Maid

Location: Shipdham - Pond near Blackmoor Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth Century onwards
Further Comments: This maid worked nearby, but after a brief relationship with her employer she left - and her body was found floating in the pond shortly after. Her spirit now haunts the area.

Sound of Steam Engines

Location: Snettisham - Area around the old Hunstanton/Kings Lynn railway line
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: People living near the old railway line have reported hearing a steam whistle and a low grumbling sound, as if the railway had never ceased operating in 1969.

Stretched Plectrum

Location: Snettisham - Skies over the Wash
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 22 August 2016
Further Comments: While watching some F15s over the Wash, a witness spotted a dark grey craft, the shape of a stretched plectrum, emerge from a cloud behind them. The ufo shimmered before entering a small cloud from which it did not reappear.

Dark Haired Mermaid

Location: Snettisham - Snettisham Beech & The Wash

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Little is known about the sighting of a mermaid with long dark hair once spotted here.


St Mary's Church, Snettisham, Norfolk.

Communication from Henry Barnard

Location: Snettisham - St Mary's Church, grave of Robert Cobb
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: October 1893
Further Comments: Mrs Goodeve, while visiting friends in the West Country, was visited at night by ghostly apparition calling itself Henry Barnard. Barnard asked Mrs Goodeve to travel to Snettisham church and wait by the grave of Robert Cobb. This she did, and at one o'clock in the morning, Mrs Goodeve was given a message by a tall dark figure who manifested by the tombstone. The message was taken to Barnard's surviving descendant at Cobb Hall, though what was said has never been told to anyone else.

Human Heartbeat

Location: Snettisham - Vicarage
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Two brothers sharing a bedroom awoke one night to hear the loud beatings of a heart in the same room. There have also been reports of phantom footsteps coming from varying parts of the building.

Magical Cow

Location: South Lopham - Currently Oxfootstone House, Brickkiln Lane
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A magical cow once appeared in the village and provided all poor people with free milk. The cow finally tired of this and kicked a nearby rock, whereupon she vanished. The rock retained her hoof mark, and is still in the village, albeit as part of the floor in Oxfootstone House.


The road between South Raynham and East Raynham, Norfolk.

Eyeless Lady

Location: South Raynham - Road between South Raynham & East Raynham
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1950s (?)
Further Comments: The eyeless lady dressed in brown reputed to lurk along the road between the two Raynham villages is thought to be Lady Dorothy Walpole, the same entity which was photographed at Raynham Hall in 1936 (although the authenticity of the image is questioned). Eric Maple wrote that the ghostly Walpole stands in the shadows along the road, as if waiting for a lift. If this is the case, one could speculate she would be trying to escape her violent husband Charles Townshend, who would keep her locked up at the hall.

Viking Funeral

Location: South Walsham - South Walsham Broad

Date / Time: 01 May (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: Reports here claim that a spectral Viking long boat appears, burning in the middle of the water.

Devil's Treasure

Location: Southwood - Old church and Callow Pit
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend states that the door handle of the church is all that remains of a treasure chest discovered by three (or two) men at the bottom of Callow Pit. As the men tried to take the chest away with them, Old Nick appeared and pulled at the other end - the men managed to escape with only one handle from the chest.

Large Cat

Location: Spixworth - Field, exact location not known

Further Comments: A witness who spotted a large black cat on the edge of a field estimated the sitting creature to be around one metre in height.

Judge Peck

Location: Spixworth - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Perhaps connected to the Spixworth Manor ghost, a local tale warns of the phantom Judge Peck who travels the area in a coach.

Lady Clad in Blue Gown

Location: Spixworth - Longe Arms public house and surrounding area
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom lady in a blue gown was said to have escorted a man named 'Old John' back from the Longe Arms every night. After he died, she was never seen again, though it is said you can hear her crying on stormy nights.
