Lady in Green

Location: Glasgow - Gothic villa close to Springburn Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - twentieth century?
Further Comments: A woman wearing a long green dress was once said to wander the property with her dog.


 
Falling Man

Location: Glasgow - Edinburgh Road, Cranhill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 2016
Further Comments: While walking towards a shop, one witness watched a man stumble across the road holding his throat before falling against a fence. As the witness approached, the figure vanished.


 
Devil on Top

Location: Glasgow - Jack's Mountain (no longer standing)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Circa 1950s
Further Comments: Jack's Mountain was a local name for a massive pile of rubbish and slag which stood, by some accounts, 30 metres tall. A local legend said that the Devil lurked on top.


 
Partick Poltergeist

Location: Glasgow - 23 Mansfield Street (since demolished)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1959 - 1961
Further Comments: The family living in this home experienced two years of inexplicable noises and constant coldness. They finally fled the site after watching a piece of coal levitate and drop back into a bucket, and a ghostly tall man standing over the children's bed.


 
Inmates and Staff

Location: Irvine - Former Ravenspark Asylum (hospital)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Ghost hunters claim that the former asylum is haunted by several former patients and at least one warden. Footsteps, banging doors and whispers have all been reported on site.


 
Castle

Location: Kilsyth - Likely to be near the grounds of Auchinvole farm
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A passenger in a vehicle briefly spotted a castle while passing through the area. After looking away and then realising that there should be no castle in the area, they looked again - the building had gone.


 
Dark Man in Hat

Location: Kirk of Shotts - Canthill Road, near the watch tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth / early twenty-first century
Further Comments: A scared female driver reported that she had hit a man who walked out of the mist along this road - he had bounced over the car, and she watched him land on his feet on the other side. When she climbed out to see if he was okay, the figure vanished. Several other people claim to have encountered the ghost, though they have been on foot at the time.


 
First Fatality

Location: Kirkfieldbank - Outside Linnmill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1912 onwards
Further Comments: Occupants of the building have reported hearing a car door being slammed shut, though nothing is ever visible. The first fatal Scottish car accident occurred just outside this property when a woman was run over.


 
Grey Abbott

Location: Lanark - Clydesdale Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This religious figure can be found in the building's cellar; the public house was placed on the site of an old monastery.


 
Blue Lady

Location: Lanark - Cartland Bridge Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This old woman has a veil covering her face. Another ghost, that of a young child, has also been seen.


 
Mrs McNeil

Location: Lanark - Applebank Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of this woman arrived at the hotel (formally an inn) at the same time a stone lintel was brought to the building from McNeil's former home. Bottles are said to have exploded, glasses have flown from the shelves, and people passing by the building late at night have heard banging noises from within.


 
Water or Ghost..?

Location: Lanark - New Lanark Mill Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 2010
Further Comments: A blurred object which appeared on CCTV camera was touted as evidence of the building's ghost, although in all likelihood it was a drop of water (or insect).


 
Woman in Nightdress

Location: Lanark - Private residence, Gallowhill area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 1994
Further Comments: A woman wearing a modern nightdress was spotted by a visitor to this property. The woman walked bent slightly forward, and disappeared into a wall.


 
Black Lady

Location: Larkhall - Broomhill House (ruins), and surrounding land
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This lady may have been murdered in the late nineteenth century, her dark form having been reported for many years since. Her presence is often indicated by the smell of spices and perfume.


 
Soft Voice

Location: Larkhall - Skelyton Farm area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 16 December 1992
Further Comments: Three power engineers were out chasing a fault in the middle of the countryside when they heard a soft female voice say a few words out loud close to them. All three turned to look at the place they thought they heard the voice, but no one was there. With nowhere for a person to hide, the three quickly left the scene.


 
Norrie Smith

Location: Lennoxtown - Campsie View Hotel
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: While this building has suffered from mild poltergeist activity (such as glasses being moved by an unseen hand), the perpetrator has been named as former owner Norrie.


 
A Former Smoker?

Location: Lesmahagow - Birkwood psychiatric hospital (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Lights would turn themselves on and off, footfalls echoed down empty corridors, and the thick smell of cigar smoke was reported by staff when this former hospital was operational.


 
Katie Neevie's Hoord

Location: Lesmahagow - A very large stone hidden on a farm in the area
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local rhyme reads: Between Dillerhill and Crossford, There lies Katie Neevie's hoord'. It is thought that the hoard takes the form of gold concealed within a kettle, a boot and a bull hide.


 
Steel Worker

Location: Motherwell - Ravenscraig Steel Works (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: This figure, thought to have been decapitated in a mining accident, was seen several times near a furnace.


 
Lucky Venture?

Location: Motherwell - Trotting Stadium
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1974
Further Comments: The stadium was briefly haunted by a horse named Lucky Venture which died on the track. The animal's shade was exorcised by a couple of local university students.


 
Three Ladies

Location: Motherwell - Dalzell House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This property is reputedly haunted three female forms. One is a grey lady, most likely a nurse who was based here during the First World War, while another is white in colour and said to haunt the peel tower. A green lady, who one witness said had bloodshot eyes, has been reported in the Piper's Gallery.


 
Oscar

Location: Motherwell - Rex Cinema (was originally the New Century Theatre, but is no longer operational; currently a snooker club?)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: Though Oscar is no longer reported, during his stay here he had a reputation of scaring away usherettes who worked the late shifts.


 
EVP

Location: Motherwell - Burns Tavern
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 2009
Further Comments: This site was investigated by Spirit Finders Scotland in 2009. The group recorded EVP and picked up EMF readings when they asked the entity to flash the lights to answer yes / no questions.


 
Knitting Woman

Location: New Lanark - Flat above unnamed shop in the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghost, dressed in a tartan cape, was seen walking about the premises whilst knitting. She passed through a closed bedroom door.


 
Crying Girl

Location: Quothquan - Shieldhill Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This woman had her newly born child snatched from her - she died of a broken heart soon after and her ghost is now occasionally seen or heard.
