One of Three Shucks

Location: Manton - Bridge between Manton & Scotter

Further Comments: One of three bridges in Lincolnshire that is said to be a haunt of the black shuck.

Victorian Lady

Location: Market Deeping - Fire Station
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: A photograph taken of the crew outside the front of the station showed a woman in Victorian dress standing in the doorway. A second photograph taken moments later showed no such figure.

Chicken Killer

Location: Market Rasen - Binbrook Farm (aka Walk House Farm)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1905
Further Comments: An outbreak of poltergeist activity resulted in several chickens being torn apart and fires spontaneously igniting, one causing serious burns to a servant girl.

Choirman

Location: Marton - Church of St Margaret of Antioch
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid-twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly old man dressed in green, spotted by the vicar on many occasions during his Sunday services, was later identified as a former choirman who had died at the end of the nineteenth century.

Headless Woman

Location: Messingham - Area south of Bridge over Bottesford Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Not much is known about this headless woman. Other than one witness mistook the reflection of the moon in water as the entity.

Catherine Bystock

Location: Metheringham - Perimeter track of the former RAF base
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 9.30 - 10.00 pm (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Killed in a motorcycle accident near the base during World War II, Catherine is said to have returned; she flags down motorists along the road and asks them to help her boyfriend who is injured down the road, only to vanish if assistance is granted.

Black Dog

Location: Moortown - Road leading to Moortown House
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This large hound was seen several times on the road, always vanishing at the same place. Other animals also felt the presence of the creature, with one pony refusing to travel down the road - the owner had to go the rest of the journey on foot. The same area was also haunted by a woman in a white apron.

White Lady of Gymes

Location: Morton - Riverside road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom woman is said to emerge from a bottomless pit along this road, close to the Trent, and cross the countryside.

Serving Girl

Location: Nocton - Nocton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local news outlet reported that the hall was haunted by a servant who fell pregnant after a fling with the owner's son - he murdered her. Former staff who worked at the site would report waking at night and seeing a sobbing girl at the foot of their beds.

Witch

Location: Normanby (Gainsborough) - Small bridge over stream, between village and Newton
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of a witch was blamed for pushing people off the small bridge that crossed the stream here. Three parsons gave the entity a live stag, which was torn apart by the witch, and while she was distracted, the holy men banished the phantom into an iron pot.

Bridge Ghost

Location: Normanby-by-Spital - Pilfer Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: While it was not clear what made horses frightened while crossing this bridge, it was thought to have something to do with the gibbet that once stood close by.

Future Husband

Location: North Kelsey - The Maiden Well (spring, current operational status not known)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: 24 April (ritual had to be done on St Mark's Eve)
Further Comments: It was possible to see one's future husband by walking backwards up to and around the spring three times before kneeling and gazing into the water.


The Black Shuck.

Church Dog

Location: Northorpe - Churchyard
Type: Werewolf
Date / Time: Circa early to mid nineteenth century
Further Comments: This churchyard is rumoured to be the haunt of the black shuck, which may have been a shape-changing local wizard. Another tale says the dog's remains were bricked up in the church walls and he is nothing more than a folk memory of the interment.

Mrs Slarum

Location: Northorpe - Northorpe Old Hall (currently in ruins)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: The ghostly Mrs Slarum was said to walk around wearing a stiff silk dress.

Officer

Location: Old Leake - Private location, Chapel Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2004
Further Comments: This witness spotted an airman in officer uniform standing at ease and watching them. The witness speculated that the ghost was related to a Lancaster bomber which crashed nearby in 1943.

Rotating Stone

Location: Orby - Wych Boulder
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: This pear-shaped rock is said to turn itself over when the clock strikes twelve.

Moving Items

Location: Owmby - Abbey (no longer standing) and unnamed cottage built on site
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: The abbey in Ownby was said to be haunted, though it has now been replaced by cottages. An old report describes what sounds like a polt outbreak within one cottage - cutlery flying around and a fire which lit and unlit itself.

Lady in Black

Location: Owston Ferry - Farmhouse (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 1950s
Further Comments: A phantom woman dressed in black silk haunted this farmhouse.

Small Man

Location: Owston Ferry - Sharp turn known as Jean Yonde, Jenny Hurn, or Jenny Hearn, depending on source
Type: Other
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: This bend in the river is (or was) home to a pygmy-like entity with the face of a seal and long hair. It would cross the water in a boat shaped like a pie dish, using spoons to row.

Hanging Man

Location: Pinchbeck - Turkey farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Shed 4 appears to be particularly haunted on this farm - the shade of a man hanging from the roof was once reported, followed a few minutes later by a ghostly old Victorian woman on a bike that cycled through a brick wall.

Headless Man

Location: Ravendale - West Ravendale Priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One local story says a woman came to the priory at night to meet her lover - seeing a figure in the moonlight, she rushed over to give him a hug, only to realise the person she had seen had no head. She fainted and was found a short time later by her lover. Local legend says it's more common for the headless man to leave the priory and return a short time later, carrying his head under one arm.

Nell Gwynne

Location: Redbourne - Red Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: It is almost as if every site Nell Gwynne ever visited is haunted by her. Just saying.

Thrower

Location: Retford - 10 Green Bottles cafe
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2019
Further Comments: A local ghost hunting team investigated this cafe after reports of an invisible entity which would throw items around. The group said they found the ladies toilet and the basement to be particularly haunted.

Shag Foal

Location: Roxby - Road formally known as Goosey Lane (and/or Boggart Lane)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1830
Further Comments: A ghostly donkey covered in long shaggy hair was said to haunt this lane.

Man with Pitted Face

Location: Ruskington - A15, just before the turning to the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: February 1998
Further Comments: A driver tried to escape a ghostly olive skinned man with a pitted face, only for the entity to hold on to the bonnet. It disappeared a short distance down the road. After this event hit the media, dozens of other witnesses came forwards, reporting a similar figure which appeared to them, dating back in some cases more than twenty years.
