Father and Son

Further Comments: Many years ago, this couple were captured by the castle's owner. Rather than be tortured, the father killed his son and then killed himself - their ghosts have since been reported standing over peoples beds.

Grey Monks

Location: Bebington - Church and graveyard

Further Comments: These robed figures float above the ground, 'walking' where the path was once much higher.

George Lyon

Location: Billinge - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1920s
Further Comments: Riding on his horse, this former highwayman passes through the village where he once hid out.

Drunken Cavalier

Location: Billinge - Stork Hotel (aka Stork Inn)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This drunken Cavalier was once seen in the men's toilets, and can sometimes be heard moving around at night.

Moving Elevator

Location: Birkdale - Palace Hotel (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: April 1969
Further Comments: The hotel, in particular the lift and the second floor, suffered from ghostly activity while demolition of the building was occurring; the lift often moved on its own accord (or failed to move when required), even though all power to the building had been cut. The ghost was named as the designer of the building, who leapt from the roof after he discovered the hotel had been built facing the wrong way.

Face at the Windows

Location: Birkenhead - Car park on the corner of Argyle Street and Canning Street opposite the Cheshire Lines building, Merseyside

Further Comments: This phantom is said to peer into windows of stationary vehicles in this car park. On the site once stood a factory, reputedly haunted by the ghost of a woman who hanged herself there.

Little Old Lady

Location: Birkenhead - Former Cammell Laird site, Merseyside

Further Comments: Lights turn themselves on and off, door open and close, and a handful of staff have reported seeing a strange old lady walking around the site. Men in boiler suits have been watched walking past windows only to vanish shortly after.

Old Tram

Location: Bispham - Tram station

Further Comments: An old tram is said to travel along the tracks to the station at the same time every morning. A paranormal team known as Spirits and Sinners investigated, and while they did not see the tram, their electrical equipment played up and they spotted a strange light which illuminated a display teddy bear.

White Dog

Further Comments: This pale little hound has been reported hanging around the area of its grave.

Further Comments: Swinging his lantern, this ghostly lone figure walks slowly along the tracks.

Strange Trees

Location: Blackburn - Billinge Wood - Crow Wood

Further Comments: Sounds of footsteps can be heard in the wood, even when no one is immediately visible. The trees are also said to dramatically change appearance.

Man in a top hat

Location: Blackburn - King George's Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A local story says that a man died after falling into a large pipe in the organ room. In 2012 a ghost hunting team claimed to have seen a man in a top hat with a damaged face and children running around corridors.

Dorothy Southworth

Location: Blackburn - Samlesbury Hall (part of the building now a restaurant), and road outside

Further Comments: This pale female spectre haunts an area of the garden where her lover was killed. It is said she is sometimes accompanied by a knight. A bus driver travelling on the road by the hall reported stopping to let a pale girl climb on board, only for her to vanish. In May 2006, the owner of a newly opened restaurant within the building reported a white figure which ran past him, cross the road, and vanished into nearby fields.

Galloping Horses

Location: Blackburn - Mill Hill area

Further Comments: A small pack of ghostly mares are reported to run in this area.

Young Child Running

Location: Blackburn - Entwistle Station - Entwistle Halt
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: A child running around the fields was once commonly seen here just prior to World War Two, even though he was killed on the nearby railway tracks as World War One raged.

Further Comments: This radio station is haunted by a man who fell down a flour chute and snapped his neck in the days when a bakery once stood on the site.


Location: Blackburn - Old Infirmary

Further Comments: Cleaning staff in this building are reported to occasionally see figures through doorways, although one member of staff came face to face with a Victorian man wearing a top hat.

Tina Turner Fan

Location: Blackburn - Fox and Hounds public house, Ewood
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: A poltergeist at work within this pub enjoyed playing Tina Turner's Be Tender with Me Baby on the juke box, as well as throwing items around and moving ornaments.

Unnamed Problem

Location: Blackley - Unnamed nursing home
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: A council care worker was disciplined after drawing a crucifix on the wall of this home to try to reduce what she believed was paranormal activity. During the 1990s, a Catholic priest had been summoned to the same location to lay reported ghosts.

Woman in Black

Location: Blackpool - Ripley's Odditorium
Type: Curse
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: When the skull of a local girl was displayed here, several people reported seeing a spectral female figure standing by it. The skull's owner was convinced the item was cursed, and died a week after finally giving it away.


Location: Blackpool - Promenade
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 15 August 2014
Further Comments: While walking along the promenade, a witness watched as a cyclist slowly approached him. The witness looked away for a moment, and when looking back ready to move out of the way, the cyclist had vanished, with no visible exits for them to have taken. After the sighting, the witness realised that the cyclist and his bike had been a single colour, either dark blue or grey.

Green Face

Location: Blackpool - Carleton Crematorium

Date / Time: 1936
Further Comments: Harry Hodges, a taxi driver, was taking his fare to the crematorium. Pulling up outside the gates, he suddenly spotted a green face belonging to a man with long dark hair and sunken eyes. Harry's passenger screamed and ran off, and the face disappeared after moving across the front windscreen.

Coach Driver

Location: Blackpool - Royal Pavilion Cinema

Further Comments: This shade claimed to be a 1920s coach driver when contacted by a medium, which was called in after evening workers reported flickering lights and cold spots in the building.

Woman on the Stairs

Location: Blackpool - Unknown hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: The sounds of heavy furniture being dragged across wooden floors has been reported here, even though all the floors are carpeted. Doors are heard to open and close themselves, and an apparition of a woman has been spotted on the staircase.


Location: Blackpool - Victoria Hospital

Further Comments: While walking a particular ward, a worker felt a tug at her tunic, as if a small child was trying to attract her attention. She turned around but no-one was there. Several staff have shared the same experience at the hospital, including a cleaner who was so unnerved they ran off, leaving their floor polisher running.
