Betty Deacon

Location: St Paul's Walden - Area around The Valley (street)

Further Comments: Betty Deacon drowned herself on 16 August 1860 in the village pond. For years afterwards, her ghost was said to scare choir boys returning from practice after dusk had fallen. Another version of the story says Betty's ghost would be seen standing at the site which would have been just outside her cottage.


Location: Stevenage - Six Hills (collection of barrows)

Further Comments: This ancient site is patrolled by a pack of large black shucks. The barrows are said to have been constructed by the devil.

Henry Trigg

Location: Stevenage - National Westminster Bank, High Street (once Old Castle Inn)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: Trigg lived in the building in the early eighteenth century, and requested that after he died, his body to be concealed in the loft. This happened, but over the next 250 years, dozens of morbid souvenir hunters removed the bones from the coffin, leaving only a lonely shade that now looks for his remains.

Running Dog

Location: Stevenage - Saint Nick's church

Further Comments: Upset by the continued yapping of the gravedigger's dog, the bell ringer poisoned the pet pooch. The animal died an agonised death, and some people now claim the dog runs around the church, floating slightly above the ground.

Man in Wide Brimmed Hat

Location: Stevenage - Area behind The Fisherman

Date / Time: 03 September 2006 and October 2011
Further Comments: Two witnesses encountered a old fashioned figure wearing a wide brimmed hat as they cut across this area. They ran off after the figure took a step towards them. They heard from a friend on the same night who also said he had been chased by a shadow wearing the same kind of hat. Several years later one of the witnesses was told that the figure had been seen again, this time by a friend of their brother.

Lady Anne's Cracked Grave

Location: Tewin - St Peter's Church

Date / Time: 1780 to present
Further Comments: Not believing in an afterlife, during her earthly days Lady Anne Grimston scoffed that trees would ruin her tomb if she was wrong. Sure enough, her tomb is now ruined by a large tree that has split the stone open. One legend has the Devil appear near her grave every New Year's Eve, on the stroke of midnight.

Lady Catherine

Further Comments: Antony Coxe reports that a room at Tewin Water is haunted by Lady Catherine.

Lady Sabine

Location: Tewin - Tewin House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The ghostly form of Lady Sabine is reported to walk around Tewin House.


Location: Thundridge - Area around Cold Christmas Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Phantom Roman soldiers were spotted near the church by a female witness during the 1940s. More recently, there are local stories about phantom children, though no witnesses appear to exist. Another myth perpetuates the belief that the church is so called as most of the children buried here died around Christmas - it is more likely that the church is named after a cold Christmas that delayed its construction by several weeks. A local legend says the church brought ill-fortune to the area, as it was constructed facing the wrong direction. More recently, strange growling has been recorded in the empty church, though the sounds are most likely from a feral cat.

Lean Hound

Location: Tring - Area where gibbet once stood

Further Comments: A black, lean dog with fiery red eyes would stand in the middle of the road in his village, sinking into the ground if approached. It was thought to be the spirit of a chimneysweep executed for murder.

Sir Henry Blount

Location: Tyttenhanger Green - Tyttenhanger House

Further Comments: Sir Henry is still thought to walk around his former house, even though he died in 1682.

Jane Wenham

Location: Walkern - Area around church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Driven from the village by a mob that believed her to be a witch, Jane never returned during her lifetime. Post mortem appears to be a different story.

Chanting Monks

Location: Ware - Amwellbury House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: These phantom monks were said to materialise and chant on the property, the evening before snow would lie.

Scarred Figure

Location: Ware - Presdlaes School woods
Type: Other
Date / Time: Seen 2003?
Further Comments: A locally told story is that of a hooded character wearing a black cape that runs around this wooded area. The ghost's skin is covered with scar marks, and its bright yellow-green eyes have black slit pupils. The entity chases after anyone it meets.

Old Car

Location: Ware - Ware High Street at the roundabout in front of 'The Waterfront' public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1998
Further Comments: A very old fashioned car driven by a determined looking man materialised along the road here, causing a female motorist to perform an emergency stop. The vehicle then vanished as quickly as it had appeared, leaving one very puzzled witness.

Drowned Man

Location: Ware - Jennings (or Jenningsbury) Farm

Further Comments: This farm is said to be haunted by a man who committed suicide by drowning.

Young Girl

Location: Ware - Feathers Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This inn is reputedly haunted by a phantom young girl.


Location: Ware - Bates Walk

Further Comments: A ghostly monk is said to move along this walk. A FOAF story says the monk chases anyone it encounters...

Jumping Jack

Location: Watford - Cassiobury Park, canal lock named Ironbridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The lock is haunted by a figure that was once paid to create havoc at the point to prevent shipments from reaching their destination. Jack was finally caught, knocked unconscious, and left to drown. The ghost of Lord Capel also walks the park, beheaded in 1649 for his royalist beliefs, while another story says a mill which once stood in the park was haunted by either a murderer or his female victim.


Location: Watford - Tunnel near Watford Junction railway station

Date / Time: Late nineteenth / early twentieth century
Further Comments: At a certain point in the tunnel, the firemen of steam driven engines reported their boilers would spit coal back at them. It was later said it was there that a pile of bodies were disturbed during the tunnel's construction, and the spirits were restless.

Mr Cooke

Location: Watford - St Mary's Church, and the nearby shopping centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This 1840's school teacher died in a fire that ravished the educational establishment, and his ghost is blamed for disrupting local shops (moving pictures, flicking lights on and off, etc).

Little Old Lady

Location: Watford - Green End Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: The phantom petite old lady who would be seen wandering around the grounds of the farm was also blamed for pulling the sheets off the bed at night. During the 1940s both the owners and local villagers reported hearing footsteps crossing cobblestones, even though the cobbles had all been removed during the 1920s.

Further Comments: Reputedly built on the site of a gallows, the empty corridors are said to be home to disembodied whistling after dark.

Tudor Man

Location: Watford - Copperfields restaurant
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1970s - 1980
Further Comments: A local newspaper carried this story after the restaurant owner reported encountering a grey misty old man in Tudor clothing over a period of four years. The ghost would only be encountered in the older part of the building.

Further Comments: Disembodied wailing and sneezing were said to have been heard late at night in the print room. Lights were also said to be turned on and off unaided.
