Further Comments: A dairymaid who committed suicide is said to be buried under an oak tree that has a coffin carved in the bark. Her wistful spirit walks the area.

Further Comments: Bournemouth man Christopher Grist photographed what appears to be the phantom figure of a soldier while in the village, though some believe the image to be a simulacrum formed by shadows.

Further Comments: This small piece of woodland was the home of a phantom dog that would physically prevent anyone from walking between the two villages.

Self Opening Gate

Location: Ulwell - Old toll gate

Further Comments: A witch, who had taken the form of a black cat, was killed while sitting on the gate. Since then, the gate is said to open for those who travel late at night.

Duke of Monmouth

Location: Uplyme - Road leading to Yawl

Date / Time: Around midnight, though date of last sighting unknown
Further Comments: Riding a white horse in the pale light of the moon, the Duke is sometimes accompanied by several ghostly guards.


Location: Verwood - The Verwood Stone (aka Hoarstone, aka Stephen's Stone)

Further Comments: Under this stone is said to be a golden container. A large black bird protected the treasure, scaring away any tomb raiders. There have been reports of unnatural cold spots in the area.

Two Adrian Browns

Location: Wareham - Undisclosed area of road

Date / Time: 1991
Further Comments: A security worker, Adrian Brown tells the story of driving his van down a road in the area, only to see himself driving the same van in the opposite direction. He was reportedly slightly freaked out at the time.


Location: Wareham - Hills around Creech Grange

Date / Time: December 1678
Further Comments: Several thousand men were said to have been seen in the area, the sound of battle filling the air. The event is said to have been witnessed by around one hundred people.

Headless Driver

Location: West Lulworth - Coach Lane

Further Comments: A ghostly coach pulled by horses and driven by a headless coachman reportedly travels along this lane.


Location: West Lulworth - Daggers Gate

Further Comments: The hare that haunts this area is thought to be the ghost of a witch. In life, she enjoyed turning herself into a Lepus.

Bloodied Ghost

Location: West Stafford - Local lane (exact location not known)

Date / Time: September 1894
Further Comments: A party of ghost hunters patrolling an alleged haunted lane in the village encountered a white figure covered by a sheet. One member of the group urged the others to attack it, which they did using sticks and clubs. The ghost fell to the ground. Once the sheet was removed, it was realised the ghost was actually a local man, who was taken to hospital for his fractured skull to be treated.

Pitch Forked Dog

Location: West Woodyates - Manor

Further Comments: A farmhand discovered a dog laying in the hay - he poked it with his pitchfork, causing the entity to vanish. The sound of a coach has also been heard as it stops by the front of the house, though nothing is seen.

White Figure

Location: Weymouth - Nothe Fort

Further Comments: A mysterious apparition is said to walk along the parapets of this building.

Horrid Old Woman

Location: Weymouth - Corner seat along promenade
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Visible only to a select few, one witness who spotted the old woman on a seat said she reeked of death. The witness's fiancée later sat in the exact spot and died of a heart attack.

Sea Shanties

Location: Weymouth - Boot Inn

Further Comments: One owner of the inn reported hearing old sea shanties being sung at night in deserted rooms and heavy footsteps walking around. A seaman has also been reported, who vanishes without trace.

Portuguese Sailor

Location: Weymouth - Spice Ship public house, Preston

Further Comments: This ghostly sailor would take the form of a poltergeist and create general mischief. It was blamed for phantom footsteps, setting off alarms and even pulling one landlord from his bed.

Further Comments: Stories perpetuated by smugglers told of phantom drowned sailors walking the roads of Fleet.

Raining Snails

Location: Weymouth - All over the area

Further Comments: Small snail shells rained down in Weymouth, with people finding the coloured carapaces gathering in their hats as they walked.

51 Vikings

Location: Weymouth - Ridgeway Hill, site of 2012 Olympics sailing centre

Further Comments: Self professed psychics were quick to announce that the discovery of 51 bodies, most likely Vikings who were executed by Saxons in the tenth century, would lead to paranormal activity.

Talking Trees

Location: Whitcombe - Culliford Tree (also known as Came Wood)

Further Comments: A woman who was planning to build a house on this barrow said that she changed her mind after hearing a voice talking to her, sounding as if it had come from the trees.

Shapeless Mass

Location: Wimborne - Barley Mow public house

Further Comments: The pub is haunted by an unearthly dark shape which hovers in the bar area. No one is too sure what exactly is it or what is represents.

Percy Newall

Location: Wimborne - King's House

Further Comments: This former reverend walks around the building early in the morning holding a bible, before disappearing into a room in the upper part of the building.


Location: Wimborne - Dickens House

Further Comments: This former man of the cloth is said to step out of a bricked up doorway wearing black and holding a bible.

Edwardian Boy

Location: Wimborne - Onslow House

Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A young boy in Edwardian attire reputedly haunts this building. He has been mistaken for a real person on at least one occasion.
